Manchester Open
The Manchester Open previously known as the Northern Lawn Tennis Championships, the Northern Championships, the Northern Tennis Tournament and the Manchester Trophy was a grass court tennis tournament on the Association of Tennis Professionals, ATP Tour held at the Northern Lawn Tennis Club, in the Didsbury suburb of Manchester, Great Britain. The tournament had been held annually from 1880 to 2009. Prior to the creation of the International Lawn Tennis Federation and the establishment of its world championship events in 1913 it was considered by players and historians one of the four most important tennis tournaments to win. The ATP Tour (known as ATP World Tour between January 2009 and December 2018) is the sole worldwide top-tier tennis tour for men organized by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) founded in 1990 that replaced the earlier dual Grand Prix tennis circuit, Grand Prix Circuit and WCT Circuit. The second-tier tour is the ATP Challenger Tour and the third-tier is the ITF Men's World Tennis Tour. The equivalent women's organisation is the WTA Tour. Champion Branfill Russell (April 1860 – 8 September 1945), was an English tennis player in the later half of the 19th century. In the most notable tournaments of the time he reached the second round of the 1881 Wimbledon Championships, and in 1883 was a finalist at the Northern Championships. He was active from 1880 to 1888 and he contested 5 career finals won 2 titles. Career Champion played his first tournament at the Essex County Cricket Club Tournament at Leyton, Essex in 1880. Herbert Wilberforce
Sir Herbert William Wrangham Wilberforce (8 February 1864 – 28 March 1941) was a British male tennis player and later vice-president of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club from 1911 to 1921, and served as its president from 1921 to 1936. His biggest singles title success was in 1883, when he won the Northern Championships. In 1887, he and Patrick Bowes-Lyon won the doubles in Wimbledon. In 1888, they were unable to defend their title when they were beaten in the Challenge Round by Ernest and William Renshaw. His best singles performance at Wimbledon came in 1886, when he reached the semifinal of the All Comers tournament in which he lost in five sets to compatriot Ernest Lewis. Ernest Renshaw
Ernest James Renshaw (3 January 1861 – 2 September 1899) was a British tennis player who was active in the late 19th century. Together with his twin brother William Renshaw, Ernest won the men's doubles at Wimbledon five times. He also won the singles championship at Wimbledon once, in 1888 and was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1983. He won the singles title at the Irish Championships on four occasions (1883, 1887, 1888, 1892). Ernest was the older of the brothers by 15 minutes and half an inch taller. John Comber
John Howard Comber (8 January 1861 – 1903) was an English cricketer. Comber's batting and bowling style is unknown. He was born at Brighton, Sussex and died at Lowell, Massachusetts. Comber made his first-class debut for Sussex against Kent at Bat and Ball Ground, Gravesend in 1885. He made two further first-class appearances for Sussex that season, against Hampshire at the County Ground, Southampton and Gloucestershire at the College Ground, Cheltenham. He struggled in his three first-class matches, scoring just 28 runs at an average of 5.60, with a high score of 8. At some point later in his life he moved to the United States where in 1892 he is recorded as an "overseer" in his marriage to Lucy Johnson in Lowell, Massachusetts; they had a daughter, also Lucy, in 1895. Richard Taswell Richardson (9 August 1852 – 16 May 1930) was a British tennis player in the early years of Wimbledon. He also played cricket. Tennis career Richardson's tennis career was brief but successful. He won the important Northern Championships three times in 1880, 1881 and 1882 (beating Ernest Renshaw in 1882). At the Wimbledon Championships in 1880, Richardson lost to Herbert Lawford in five sets in round three.
