Malverne Station (LIRR)
Malverne is a historic railroad station along the West Hempstead Branch of the Long Island Rail Road. It is officially located at Hempstead Avenue and Utterby Road, in Malverne, New York, and is also parallel to Church Street near Malverne Village Hall. Parking is primarily for those with residential and non-residential permits, but metered parking is available. History Depending on the source, the station was built in either 1909 or February 1913. The station was originally named "Norwood" until it, and the community it serves were renamed Malverne, in order to alleviate confusion with another Norwood, New York in St. Lawrence County. "Norwood" was also the name of a station on the former Southern Hempstead Branch of the South Side Railroad of Long Island. Though not officially considered a historic landmark, it is the oldest surviving station along the West Hempstead Branch. West Hempstead Branch
The West Hempstead Branch is an electrified rail line owned and operated by the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) in the U.S. state of New York. It runs between Valley Stream, New York, and West Hempstead, New York. Route description The branch separates from the Montauk Branch just east of Valley Stream, and runs northeast to West Hempstead. The line has one track between Westwood station and Hempstead Gardens and two from there to the end of the line in West Hempstead, the southbound or east track being a siding. The right-of-way of the West Hempstead Branch is wide enough for two tracks for its whole length. Norwood is a village located in St. Lawrence County, New York, United States. As of the 2010 census, the village had a total population of 1560. The village is located partly in two towns, Potsdam and of Norfolk, and located is east of the village of Potsdam. History The community was known early in its history as "Raquetteville." Southern Hempstead Branch
The Southern Hempstead Branch was a branch of the Long Island Rail Road from Valley Stream to Hempstead. It was established in 1870 and abandoned in May 1879, and is not the same route as the current West Hempstead Branch.
