Maltravers Herald Extraordinary
Maltravers Herald of Arms Extraordinary is a current officer of arms extraordinary in England. As such, Maltravers is a royal herald, but is not a member of the College of Arms in London. The present office was created in 1887 by the Earl Marshal, who was also the Duke of Norfolk and Baron Maltravers. The office is known to have been held by a pursuivant to Lord Maltravers when he was deputy of Calais from 1540 to 1544. The badge is blazoned as ''A Fret Or''. It was officially assigned in 1973, though it had been assumed by two Maltravers Heralds in the 1930s. It derives from the coat of arms of Maltravers ''Sable a Fret Or and a Label of the points Ermine'', and was the badge of John, Earl of Arundel through which family the barony passed to the Howard dukes of Norfolk. Heraldic Badge
A heraldic badge, emblem, impresa, device, or personal device worn as a badge indicates allegiance to, or the property of, an individual, family or corporate body. Medieval forms are usually called a livery badge, and also a cognizance. They are para-heraldic, not necessarily using elements from the coat of arms of the person or family they represent, though many do, often taking the crest or supporters. Their use is more flexible than that of arms proper. Badges worn on clothing were common in the late Middle Ages, particularly in England. They could be made of base metal, cloth or other materials and worn on the clothing of the followers of the person in question; grander forms would be worn by important persons, with the Dunstable Swan Jewel in enamelled gold a rare survivor. John Martin Robinson
John Martin Robinson FSA (born 1948) is a British architectural historian and officer of arms. He was born in Preston, Lancashire, and educated at Fort Augustus Abbey, a Benedictine school in Scotland, the University of St Andrews (graduating MA and awarded D.LITT in 2002) and then in 1970 arrived at Oriel College, Oxford, to prepare for a DPhil. The doctoral degree was awarded in 1974 for work on the architect Samuel Wyatt. He worked for the Greater London Council Historic Buildings Division from 1974 to 1986, where he worked inter alia as architectural editor of the Survey of London, and Historic Buildings Inspector for Westminster, and also revised the Statutory Lists of Historic Buildings for 2 east London boroughs. As an independent consultant since 1988 he has advised on the restoration of numerous country houses, churches and other listed buildings. Aubrey Toppin
Aubrey John Toppin (1881 – 1969) was a long-serving English officer of arms at the College of Arms in London. Toppin was born in Twickenham in 1881. His first job was at the Science and Art Museum, Dublin from 1901 to 1906, until he gained the post of First Assistant to the Keeper of Irish Antiquities at the National Museum of Ireland in 1906. In 1907, he was promoted to the position of Assistant Keeper of the Art and Antiquities Division, a position which he held until his retirement from Ireland in 1923. Toppin also served ably during World War I and was a captain in the Third Battalion, the Royal Irish Rifles. His heraldic career began on 24 July 1923, when Toppin was appointed Bluemantle Pursuivant of Arms in Ordinary. Oswald Barron
(Arthur) Oswald Barron (3 January 1868 – 24 September 1939) was a journalist and scholar on heraldic and genealogical subjects. Early life Born at West Ham in Essex, he was one of five children of Henry Stracey Barron (1838–1918), a consulting mechanical engineer, one-time chief engineer of the Imperial Ottoman Arsenal, and his wife Harriet (née Marshall). The Barron family later lived at Lewisham. Barron was educated at Merchant Taylors' School in London, as his father had been. Career Most of his career was spent on the staff of the London ''Evening News'', where he had a daily column which he signed as "The Londoner". Sir William Bull, 1st Baronet
Sir William James Bull, 1st Baronet, (29 September 1863 – 23 January 1931) was an English solicitor and Conservative politician. Biography Bull was the son of Henry Bull, a solicitor, and his wife Cecilia Ann Howard, daughter of James Peter Howard. He was returned to Parliament for Hammersmith in 1900, a seat he held until 1918, and then sat for Hammersmith South until 1929. Bull was knighted in 1905. That year Walter Long became Chief Secretary for Ireland, and Bull was his Parliamentary Private Secretary. A few years later, the Anti-Socialist Union was set up, and Bull served on its executive committee with R. D. Blumenfeld, while Long was a vice-president. Joseph Jackson Howard, LL.D., FSA (12 April 1827 – 18 April 1902) was an English genealogist who was Maltravers Herald of Arms Extraordinary 1887-1902. Life The only son of Peter Howard of Clifton Cottage, Portland Place, Leamington, he was educated at Trinity Hall, Cambridge. He entered Lincoln's Inn in 1847 and was called to the bar in 1856. A pioneer of the Civil Service Cooperative Stores, which became the Civil Service Supply Association, of which he was Chairman, he became Maltravers Herald Extraordinary in 1887. Having been elected Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1854, he originated and was editor of ''Miscellanea Genealogica et Heraldica'' from 1866, was a founder of the Harleian Society, and joint-founder and editor of ''The Visitation of England and Wales'', 1893, and ''The Visitation of Ireland'', 1897.
