Malad River (Utah)
The Malad River is a tributary of the Bear River in southeastern Idaho and northern Utah in the western United States. Description The river flows southward, beginning northwest of Malad City, Idaho, crosses the Idaho-Utah state line just north of Portage, Utah, flows through Tremonton, and empties into the Bear River just south of Bear River City. Malad River was so named on account of the river making pioneers sick, ''malade'' meaning "sick" in French. Tremonton, Utah
Tremonton is a city in Box Elder County, Utah. The population was 7,647 at the time of the 2010 census. History Although the first settlers came to the Tremonton area in 1888, it remained largely uninhabited until just before 1900, when land agents started promoting the Bear River Valley as a place for Midwestern farmers to relocate. Small groups from Nebraska and Illinois began to arrive in 1898. These settlers were a diverse blend of Protestant faiths, in contrast to their mostly Mormon neighbors. Then an Apostolic Christian Church group came in 1901–1904. The main body was from Tremont, Illinois, joined by a few families from Ohio and Kansas. Bear River City is a city in Box Elder County, Utah, United States. The population was 853 at the 2010 census, an increase over the 2000 population of 750. The population was sufficient under Utah state law for Bear River to become a city near the end of 2000. Although current state law requires a minimum population of 1000 for cities, Bear River City remains a city. A group first settled Bear River City from Brigham City in 1866. Bear River (Great Salt Lake)
The Bear River is the largest tributary of the Great Salt Lake, draining a mountainous area and farming valleys northeast of the lake and southeast of the Snake River Plain. It flows through southwestern Wyoming, southeastern Idaho, and northern Utah, in the United States. Approximately long it is the longest river in North America that does not ultimately reach the sea. History The river valley was inhabited by the Shoshone people. Fur trappers from the Hudson's Bay Company began to penetrate the area, exploring south from the Snake River as early as 1812. John C. Frémont explored the area in 1843, and the Mormon Trail crossed the Bear River south of Evanston. The California and Oregon Trails followed the Bear River north out of Wyoming to Fort Hall in Idaho.
