Malabo Mosque
Malabo Mosque ( es, link=no, Mezquita de Malabo) also known as Malabo Central Mosque ( es, link=no, Mezquita Central de Malabo) is a mosque in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea. It is the largest mosque in Equatorial Guinea and can accommodate two thousand people. History Hausa Muslims from Cameroon and Nigeria built a mosque in Malabo sometime in the early 20th century. They sold African masks and statues to European settlers and supplied plantation managers with imported goods such as medicine brought in from Nigeria. The mosque they built no longer exists, having been demolished due to its dilapidated state. It was replaced by a temporary mosque in the northern suburbs of Malabo. In 2014, the First Lady of Equatorial Guinea, Constancia Mangue, agreed to finance the construction of a new mosque in the city. Ikililou Dhoinine (, born 14 August 1962) is a Comoros, Comorian politician who was the President of the Comoros from 2011 to 2016; he was a Vice-President of Comoros from 2006 to 2011. Political career Dhoinine won the Comorian presidential election, 2010, 2010 Comorian presidential election, in which he received the most votes in the first round (28.19%). Equatorial Guinea is a Christian majority country, with Islam being a minority religion. Due to the secular nature of the country's constitution, Muslims are free to proselytize and build places of worship in the country. In the 2021 Aid to the Church in Need religious freedom report it was estimated that 4.1% of the population were muslims. Previous estimates by the official press agency of Equatorial Guinea in 2015 reported that 3.5% of the population were muslim and the U.S. State Department International Religious Freedom Report 2006 found that practitioners of Islam comprised less than 1 percent of the population. Malabo Mosque was opened in 2015 and can accommodate two thousand people. On 2 May 2022, over 500 muslims gathered on the Malabo promenade to pray and celebrate the end of Ramadan known as Eid al-Fitr after not being able to perform these prayers at the end of the fasting month in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19 restrictions.
