''Mahanagar'' ("Metropolis") is a Marathi and Hindi newspaper published from Mumbai, India. The Marathi version ''Aapla Mahanagar'' ("Our metropolis") was founded by Nikhil Wagle in January 1990; the Hindi version ''Hamara Mahanagar'' was established in 1982. Sanjay Bhaskar Sawant is now editor & publisher of Aapla Mahanagar & mymahanagar.com Nikhil Wagle was physically attacked by Shiv Sena supporters multiple times for his critical remarks against the party and its leaders. In 1994, Wagle was imprisoned for a week after he criticized the Maharashtra legislators for paying fawning tributes to a deceased MLA accused of having criminal connections. Nikhil Wagle is a journalist from the Indian state of Maharashtra. Career Print media Nikhil Wagle started his media career in 1977 as a freelance reporter. He later joined ''Dinank'', a Marathi newsweekly, in Mumbai. In 1979, when the editor of ''Dinank'' resigned, the publisher asked 19-year-old Wagle to become the managing editor. Wagle later became the editor-in-chief of ''Dinank''. Subsequently, he went to Pune, and joined Kirloskar Group, which owned a couple of magazines at that time. However, within one month, he quit his new job and came back to Mumbai. In 1982, he started his own publishing house and started a new magazine called ''Akshar''. In 1983, he started a sports magazine ''Shatkar'' with Sandeep Patil as editor. Shiv Sena ( IAST: ''Śiva Sēnā'') () was a right-wing to far-right Marathi regionalist and Hindu ultranationalist political party in India founded in 1966 by cartoonist Bal Thackeray. Originally emerging from nativist movements in Bombay (present-day Mumbai), the party agitated for preferential treatment for the Marathi people over migrants from other parts of India. Its election symbol for Maharashtra was the ''Bow and Arrow''. Although the party's primary base always remained in Maharashtra, it tried to expand to a pan-Indian base. The Marathi language has a long history of literature and culture. The first Marathi newspaper, '' Darpan'', was started on 6 January 1832 by Balshastri Jambhekar. The paper was bilingual fortnightly also published in English as '' The Bombay Darpan'' and stopped publishing in 1840. Founded in 1881 by Bal Gangadhar Tilak, the daily '' Kesari'' was a prominent newspaper of the pre-Independence era with a large readership. It claimed to have circulation of 3500 within two years of establishment and reached up to 22,000 during 1908. Narayan Meghaji Lokhande's Marathi daily '' Din Bandhu'', which focused on social causes of labour class, was the second largest circulation in Bombay Presidency with 1650 copies a week in 1884.
