The ''Madonna of the Rose Garden'' (Italian: ''Madonna del Roseto'') is an International Gothic painting attributed to Michelino da Besozzo or Stefano da Verona. Dating to c. 1420–1435, it is now in the Castelvecchio Museum in Verona, northern Italy. Description The tempera on panel painting shows the traditional theme of the Madonna with Child within an enclosure of roses, a ''hortus conclusus'', symbol of her virginity, in the presence of St. Catherine of Alexandria. The latter, as a princess, is crowned, and is accompanied by her martyrdom attribute of the torture wheel. There are also numerous slender angels. They are performing a series of activities: reading (a hint to the religious texts), collecting petals of rose, playing near a Gothic font (symbolizing the definition of Mary as ''Fons gratiae'', "Spring of Grace"). Michelino Da Besozzo
Michelino Molinari da Besozzo (c. 1370 – c. 1455) was a notable fifteenth century Italian painter and illuminator, who was widely praised for his work. He worked mostly in Milan and Lombardy, and was employed by the Visconti family, rulers of Milan. Michelino's work follows the traditions of the Lombard School, and maintains the Trecento style. Personal life Michelino was born in 1388 and died sometime after 1450. It is believed that he is referred to in some documents from the period by the name Michele da Pavia, as he lived in Pavia at the beginning of his career, where he left some frescoes inside the Visconti Castle. Michelino lived in Milan from 1439 until his death, where he worked for the Viscontis, rulers of Milan. When his patron, first Duke of Milan Gian Galeazzo Visconti died and Giovanni Maria Visconti fell into power, Michelino moved to Venice and Vicenza to avoid Giovanni's difficult reign. The ''Madonna of the Quail'' (Italian: ''Madonna della Quaglia'') is an International Gothic painting generally attributed to Pisanello. Dating to c. 1420, it was housed in the Castelvecchio Museum of Verona, northern Italy until stolen in 2015. It would be recovered in 2016. Description The painting depicts the Madonna with Child crowned by two flying angels, sitting inside a rose garden in typical late Gothic style. The painter put a great attention in the representation of vegetables and birds, including the quail in the foreground, which gives its name to the painting. The heavenly appearance of the scene is enhanced by the gilt background. The rendering of the Madonna and her clothes resemble those of the works by Gentile da Fabriano, whose workshop Pisanello was a member of at the time. Stefano Da Verona
Stefano da Verona (or da Zevio; 1379 – c. 1438) was an Italian painter who was active in Verona. He was the son of the French painter Jean d'Arbois, who had come to Italy at the court for Gian Galeazzo Visconti after working for Philip II of Burgundy. He likely apprenticed at Pavia in the workshops of illuminators of the Visconti. He was influenced by Michelino da Besozzo, as it can be seen in the '' Madonna of the Rose Garden'' (1420s–1430s), variously attributed to him or Michelino.
