Blepharipappus
''Blepharipappus'' is a North American plant genus in the family Asteraceae containing the single known species ''Blepharipappus scaber'', known by the common name rough eyelash, or rough eyelashweed. ''Blepharis'' is Greek for 'eyelash' and ' pappus' refers to the feathery part of the plant's seeds. ''Blepharipappus scaber'' is a small, inconspicuous, annual plant herb to the northwestern United States (Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Nevada, and northern California). It grows in sandy soil in forests at elevations of 300–2200 meters (1000–7300 feet) and in the western portion of the sagebrush steppe. Growing up to several inches in height, the plant raises slender, fuzzy stems, with alternate leaves. Atop the stems bloom between one and several daisylike flower heads. These have 3–8 three-lobed ray florets, which are white with purple markings, while the center of the head is packed with about 10 white disc florets with purple anthers. The fruit is a dark achene which often b ...

Silversword Alliance
The silversword alliance, also known as the tarweeds, refers to an adaptive radiation of around 30 species in the composite or sunflower family, Asteraceae. The group is endemic to Hawaii, and is derived from a single immigrant to the islands. For radiating from a common ancestor at an estimated 5.2±0.8 Ma, the clade is extremely diverse, composed of trees, shrubs, subshrubs, mat-plants, cushion plants, rosette plants, and lianas. The silversword alliance is named for its most famous and visually striking members, the silverswords. The species of the clade break down into three genera: ''Wilkesia, Argyroxiphium,'' and ''Dubautia.'' There are three species of silverswords and two greenswords in the genus ''Argyroxiphium'', confined to the islands of Maui and Hawaii, and two species of ''Wilkesia'' (''iliau'') on Kauai. The bulk of the species are placed in the genus ''Dubautia'', which is widespread on all the main islands. The genus ''Dubautia'' contains a wide variety of form ...

Eatonella
''Eatonella'' is a North American genus of plants in the family Asteraceae containing the single known species ''Eatonella nivea'', which is called by the common name white false tickhead. This small annual is native to the western United States, particularly the Great Basin, where it grows in sandy soils. It has been found in Washington (Grant + Kittitas Counties), Oregon, Idaho, Nevada, and eastern California ( Modoc, Lassen, Mono, and Inyo Counties). ''Eatonella nivea'' is a short annual plant, growing in a clump rarely more than 5 centimeters (2 inches) high and not much more wide. It has tiny dark green leaves no more than 30 mm (1.2 inches) long, densely packed together and covered in a thick grayish wool. The plant produces flower heads one at a time, which look like tiny pale yellow daisies less than a centimeter across, with up to 13 yellow or purple ray florets and up to 14 yellow disc florets. The fruits are shiny black achenes with white fringe, each a few mil ...

Amblyopappus
''Amblyopappus'' is a genus of flowering plants in the family Asteraceae described as a genus in 1841. There is only one known species, ''Amblyopappus pusillus'', known by the common name dwarf coastweed. This plant is native to Baja California in Mexico and the coast of Southern California in the United States. It can also be found on the west coast of Chile and Peru in South America. ''Amblyopappus pusillus'' is an aromatic annual herb with an erect stem up to 40 centimeters in height. The stem turns dark red with age. It is covered in narrow fleshy leaves and each small branch of the stem is topped with an inflorescence of one to several rounded budlike yellow flowers. The bract In botany, a bract is a modified or specialized leaf, especially one associated with a reproductive structure such as a flower, inflorescence axis or cone scale. Syntrichopappus
''Syntrichopappus'' is a genus of flowering plants in the family Asteraceae, found in the Southwestern United States and northern Mexico, including Baja California. It is a member of the Heliantheae alliance of the Asteraceae. There are two species.California Desert Wildflowers, An Introduction to Families, Genera, and Species; Sia Morhardt, Emil Morhardt; p 74-5 Common names include xerasid and Frémont's-gold. The name ''"Syntrichopappus"'' derives from a Greek name: "syn" = "joined together", "tricho" = "hair", of the " pappus", which means many bristles fused at the base (however some species have no pappus).Jepson Desert Manual: Syntrichopappus, Dale E. Johnson, 2002 Ed., p 184 The common name "xerasid" derives from Greek, meaning "son of dryness". Description Leaves Leaves are simple, alternate, sometimes with the lowest ones opposite. Inflorescence Flower heads are solitary. There is one yellow (or white with red veins) ray flower per phyllary, with 3-lobed ligules. The ...

Argyroxiphium
''Argyroxiphium'' is a small genus of plants in the family Asteraceae. Its members are known by the common names silversword or greensword due to their long, narrow leaves and the silvery hairs on some species. The silverswords belong to a larger Adaptive radiation, radiation of over 50 species, including the physically different genera ''Dubautia'' and ''Wilkesia''. This grouping is often referred to as the silversword alliance.[B. Baldwin. Age and Rate of Diversification of the Hawaiian Silversword Alliance (Compositae). 1998.] Botanist P. H. Raven referred to this radiation as "the best example of adaptive radiation in plants". Description Species in ''Argyroxiphium'' are Perennial plant, perennial, Rosette (botany), rosette-forming shrubs. They may consist of a single large rosette or a collection of several rosettes. In all ''Argyroxiphium'' species, long, narrow leaves contain interstitial gels hypothesized to function as water storage. For some species, leaves are cove ...
