Madeline Lee (opera)
''Madeline Lee'' is a one act Australian opera, composed by John Haddock to a libretto written by the composer and Michael Campbell. It premiered at the Sydney Opera House on 8 October 2004 in an Opera Australia production directed by Michael Campbell and conducted by Tom Woods. Plot The story of the opera is based on the disappearance of the B-24 bomber '' Lady Be Good'' in 1943 over Libya in North Africa. Taking elements of the story as portrayed in the television movie '' Sole Survivor'', it enlarges on the themes of dislocation, memory, isolation and identity, and concentrates on the internal relationship between the dead crew and the Major, who heads the search and rescue party sent to survey the wreck. The revelation of their intertwined fate culminates in a dramatic re-enactment of the ''Madeline Lee''’s final bombing mission over the Mediterranean and the recovery by the Major of his suppressed memories of the event. Australian Opera And Ballet Orchestra
The Opera Australia Orchestra (based in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia) is a full-time salaried orchestra, and a wholly owned subsidiary of Opera Australia. It is one of three salaried orchestras in Sydney, along with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Australian Chamber Orchestra. The OAO performs almost exclusively in the Opera House Orchestra pit of the Joan Sutherland Theatre. The OAO (and its Melbourne counterpart Orchestra Victoria) were known as The Elizabethan Sydney Orchestra and The Elizabethan Melbourne Orchestra respectively, established by the Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust in 1967. Brian Thomson (b. 1946) is an Australian theatre, opera and film designer. He has been active in Australian stage design since the 1970s. Biography Originally an architecture student, Thomson dropped out of university to become an artist, and began working in theatre after meeting director Jim Sharman in 1969. They had a long and successful work collaboration together, beginning at the Old Tote Theatre Company, before working on a series of hugely successful musical productions including the Melbourne production of ''Hair'', and the original Australian and London productions of ''Jesus Christ Superstar'' and ''The Rocky Horror Show''. Bass-baritone
A bass-baritone is a high-lying bass or low-lying "classical" baritone voice type which shares certain qualities with the true baritone voice. The term arose in the late 19th century to describe the particular type of voice required to sing three Wagnerian roles: the title role in ''Der fliegende Holländer'', Wotan/Der Wanderer in the ''Ring Cycle'' and Hans Sachs in '' Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg''.
