Madeleine McTernan
Madeleine "Maddie" McTernan (born 29 December 2000) is an Australian Paralympic swimmer. She represented Australia at the 2020 Summer Paralympics where she won a silver medal. Personal life McTernan was born on 29 December 2000 in Nambour Queensland. She has an intellectual disability. She grew up in Coffs Harbour where in primary school, she attended St Francis Xavier School in Woolgoolga, New South Wales. In 2016 she moved to the Gold Coast where in high school she went to Aquinas College, Southport. Swimming career McTernan is S14 swimmer. Her swimming started as a child and won her first medal in 2013 whilst a grade six student. In Coffs Harbour she was coached by Eugene Brogmus. She moved to St Hilda's Swim Club on the Gold Coast to further her swimming career. At the 2019 World Para Swimming Championships in London, she finished fifth Women's 100 m Backstroke S14 final. Paralympic Swimming
Para swimming is an adaptation of the sport of swimming for athletes with disabilities. Para swimmers compete at the Summer Paralympic Games and at other sports competitions throughout the world. The sport is governed by the International Paralympic Committee. Both men and women compete in para swimming, racing against competitors of their own gender. Swimming has been a part of the Paralympic program since the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, Italy. Rules Rules for the sport are adapted from those set forth by the International Swimming Federation (FINA). Swimmers compete individually in backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, freestyle, individual medley, and as teams in relay races. The 2022 Commonwealth Games, officially known as the XXII Commonwealth Games and commonly known as Birmingham 2022, was an international multi-sport event for members of the Commonwealth of Nations that took place in Birmingham, England between 28 July and 8 August 2022.
