Madaraka Day
Madaraka Day ("Internal self rule" or ''Self-Governance'' Day) is a national holiday that is celebrated every 1 June in every year in the Kenya, Republic of Kenya. It commemorates the day in 1963 that Kenya attained internal self rule after being a British colony since 1920.Facts and Figures Government of Kenya, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. (Accessed 1 June 2011) Kenya only attain partial independence on this day in 1963 and did not become a fully established republic until about a year and a half later on 12 December 1964. Swahili, also known by its local name , is the native language of the Swahili people, who are found primarily in Tanzania, Kenya and Mozambique (along the East African coast and adjacent litoral islands). It is a Bantu language, though Swahili has borrowed a number of words from foreign languages, particularly Arabic, but also words from Portuguese, English and German.
