Macit Özcan
Macit Özcan, (born 1954 in Karataş, Adana Province, Turkey) is a Turkish politician of the Republican People's Party (CHP) and a former mayor of Mersin. After his secondary education in Adana, he graduated in civil engineering from Çukurova University. He went on to work as a civil engineer in the Ministry of Public Works and Housing. He has lived in Mersin since 1980. He was elected Mayor of Mersin in 1999. He successfully stood for a third term in the 2009 Turkish local elections, March 2009 election. But in 2014 (partially because of the change in the election territory borders) he lost the 2014 Turkish local elections, elections. Özcan has been accused of being a "political octopus" and prone to corruption and dishonesty. Committed to improving relations with his Arab neighbours, in 2006 Özcan launched a ferry service to the Syrian port of Latakia, which is one of Mersin's twin cities. He is married with two children. Karataş
Karataş ( gr, Μέγαρσος, Mègarsos) is a small city and a district in Adana Province, on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey, 47 km from the city of Adana, between the rivers of Seyhan and Ceyhan, the Pyramos of Antiquity. The city of Karataş has a population of 8,483 (in 2010), with another 13,000 living in surrounding villages. History The area has been inhabited from at least Hittite times and probably earlier. Adana Province ( tr, ) is a province of Turkey located in central Cilicia. With a population of 2.26 million, it is the sixth most populous province in Turkey. Republican People's Party
The Republican People's Party ( tr, Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi, , acronymized as CHP ) is a Kemalist and social-democratic political party in Turkey which currently stands as the main opposition party. Mersin
Mersin (), also known as İçel, is a large city and a port on the Mediterranean Sea, Mediterranean coast of southern Turkey. It is the provincial capital of Mersin Province, Mersin (İçel) Province. Çukurova University
Çukurova University ( tr, Çukurova Üniversitesi) is a public university in Adana, Turkey. The university has sixteen faculties, three colleges, seven vocational colleges, three institutes and twenty six research and application centers. The university campus is located away from Adana city center, by the Seyhan Dam Lake. The university, with its 1903 teaching staff, offers courses to over 40,000 undergraduate, post graduate and doctorate students. The library has internet access and houses national and international publications. Computer rooms are available for student use campus-wide. 2009 Turkish Local Elections
Local elections were held in Turkey on 29 March 2009. The overall winner was the ruling party Justice and Development Party (Turkey), Justice and Development Party, although the party saw a decline in its vote relative to the 2007 Turkish general election, 2007 general election. The leading opposition party, the social democratic Kemalist Republican People's Party, CHP, increased its vote share, as did a number of smaller parties including the Felicity Party, SP, Democratic Society Party, DTP and Great Union Party, BBP, whose party leader Muhsin Yazıcıoğlu had died in a 2009 Medair TC-HEK helicopter crash, helicopter crash four days before the election. 2014 Turkish Local Elections
Local elections (formal: local authority general elections, Turkish: ''Mahalli İdareler Genel Seçimi'' or simply ''Yerel Seçimleri'') were held in Turkey on 30 March 2014, with some repeated on 1 June 2014. Metropolitan and district mayors as well as their municipal council members in cities, and muhtars and "elderly councils" in rural areas (and also in mahalles within urban areas) were elected. In light of the controversy around the elections, it was viewed as a referendum on the government of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. About 50 million people were eligible to vote. A local government re-organisation took place before the election, lowering the total number of elected officials from 38,592 to 23,132.
