Polish Language
Polish (Polish: ''język polski'', , ''polszczyzna'' or simply ''polski'', ) is a West Slavic language of the Lechitic group written in the Latin script. It is spoken primarily in Poland and serves as the native language of the Poles. In addition to being the official language of Poland, it is also used by the Polish diaspora. There are over 50 million Polish speakers around the world. It ranks as the sixth most-spoken among languages of the European Union. Polish is subdivided into regional dialects and maintains strict T–V distinction pronouns, honorifics, and various forms of formalities when addressing individuals. The traditional 32-letter Polish alphabet has nine additions (''ą'', ''ć'', ''ę'', ''ł'', ''ń'', ''ó'', ''ś'', ''ź'', ''ż'') to the letters of the basic 26-letter Latin alphabet, while removing three (x, q, v). Maciej Wojtyszko (; born in Warsaw, Mazowieckie on April 14, 1946) is a Polish film director, screenwriter and fiction author. Biography Maciej Wojtyszko graduated from the ''Liceum Technik Teatralnych'' in Warsaw in 1965. After having studied Philosophy at the University of Warsaw, he went to the National Film School in Łódź, where he graduated as a director in 1973. He was lecturer at the Aleksander Zelwerowicz State Theatre Academy in Warsaw in 1990-93 and 1999–2002, and Dean of the ''Halina and John Machulskich Theatre School''. He is a member of the Association of Polish Writers. In 2002, Maciej Wojtyszko was awarded with the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Rebirth of Polish for his “outstanding contribution to the Polish culture”. Maciej Rataj (19 February 1884 – 21 June 1940) was a Polish politician and writer. Biography Born in the village of Chłopy, near Lwów (now Lviv, Ukraine), on 19 February 1884, he attended a gymnasium in Lwów and studied classical linguistics at the University of Lwów. Upon the completion of his studies he became a gymnasium teacher first in Lwów, and later in Zamość. He became involved in politics after the Second Polish Republic gained independence following the First World War. He was a member of the Polish People's Party "Piast" political party, and, from 1931, a member of the People's Party. He became president of the Stronnictwo and the chief editor of the party's official paper, the 'Zielony Sztandar' in 1935. Maciej Płażyński (; 10 February 1958 – 10 April 2010) was a Polish liberal-conservative politician. Biography Płażyński was born in Młynary. He began his political career in 1980 / 1981 as one of the leaders of the Students' Solidarity; he was governor of the Gdańsk Voivodship from August 1990 to July 1996, and was elected to the Sejm (the lower house of the Polish parliament) in September 1997. To date he is longest serving Marshal of the Sejm of the Third Republic of Poland. In January 2001, he founded the Civic Platform political party with Donald Tusk and Andrzej Olechowski.
