MacPherson MRT Station
MacPherson MRT station is an underground Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) interchange station on the Downtown line and Circle line in Geylang planning area, Singapore, located underneath Paya Lebar Road at the junction with Circuit Link and Ubi Avenue 2. Named after the nearby MacPherson estate, which itself was named after Colonel Ronald MacPherson, the first Colonial Secretary of the Straits Settlements in 1867, this station serves not only the residents of MacPherson estate but also the Ubi industrial estate. History Contract 822 for the construction of MacPherson station was awarded to Econ Corporation Ltd - NCC International AB Joint Venture at a contract sum of more than S$300 million. MacPherson, Singapore
MacPherson is a neighbourhood located within the district of Geylang in the Central Region of Singapore. Its location roughly corresponds to the identically titled subzone in the Geylang Planning Area and is approximately sandwiched between the neighbourhoods of Aljunied and Paya Lebar. MacPherson largely consists of various public housing estates centered on Circuit Road and an industrial area. The Pelton Canal runs through the neighbourhood, which separates a private housing estate off MacPherson Road, and the public housing estate along Circuit Road. Many residents in MacPherson are of the older generation, largely stemming from the fact that it was one of the first few major public housing projects to be enacted during the 1950s to 1970s. Kampong Ubi
Kampong Ubi, also known as Ubi Estate, is a subzone located in the planning area of Geylang in the Central Region of Singapore. It lies within a somewhat rhombic piece of land bounded by Airport Road at the north, the Pan-Island Expressway at the south, Eunos Link at the east and Paya Lebar Road at the west. The area was formerly a Malay village. Etymology and early history The Malay word ''Ubi'' refers to the tapioca plant. Malays used to grow small tapioca farms in the area. Kampong Ubi ( Jawi: كامڤوڠ اوبي) was a rather large village even for its time. The first settlements began at the junction of Jalan Ubi and Changi Road, and quickly expanded northwards to the areas designated as the Kampong Ubi subzone today. Ronald MacPherson
Ronald MacPherson (14 July 1817 – 6 December 1869) was a military officer, architect and colonial administrator in Singapore. He is well known for the design of the St Andrew Cathedral. Early life and education Born in the Isle of Skye, MacPherson was of Irish-Scots descent. MacPherson was educated at the East India Company's military college in Addiscombe, Croydon between 1834 and 1836. Career Military MacPherson passed for the Engineers Corps, but as there were few nominations for Engineers Corps. Instead, he was gazetted as 2nd lieutenant in the Madras Artillery on the 10 June 1836 and arrived at India on the 27 November of the same year. In India, he learnt Arabic and Hindustani, studied engineering and helped to prepare the Madras Gunnery Tables, which European artillery companies consulted for many years. Geylang
Geylang is a planning area and township located on the eastern fringe of the Central Region of Singapore, bordering Hougang and Toa Payoh in the north, Marine Parade in the south, Bedok in the east, and Kallang in the west. Geylang is perhaps best known as a red-light district, particularly the areas along Geylang Road. Geylang is also where one of Singapore's oldest Malay settlements, Geylang Serai, is located. An island platform (also center platform, centre platform) is a station layout arrangement where a single platform is positioned between two tracks within a railway station, tram stop or transitway interchange. Island platforms are popular on twin-track routes due to pragmatic and cost reasons. Circle MRT Line
The Circle MRT Line (CCL) is a medium-capacity Mass Rapid Transit line in Singapore operated by SMRT Corporation. It runs in a currently incomplete loop from Dhoby Ghaut station in the city area of Singapore to HarbourFront station in the south via Bishan station in Central Singapore. It also has a branch to Marina Bay station from Promenade station, which will be extended to Harbourfront station from 2026 to form a complete loop.
