Derrick Somerset Macnutt (1902–1971) was a British crossword compiler who provided crosswords for ''The Observer'' newspaper under the pseudonym Ximenes. His main oeuvre was blocked-grid and "specialty" puzzles. Even though he only provided conventional blocked puzzles once a week for the ''Observer'' Everyman series for about two years his strong views on clueing, expressed in his 1966 book, have been a source of debate in the cryptic crossword world ever since. Career Macnutt was born at Eastbourne in Sussex and was educated at Marlborough College before achieving a Double First in classics at Jesus College, Cambridge. Between 1928 and 1963 he held the position of Head of Classics at Christ's Hospital near Horsham, West Sussex, as well as being a housemaster. Frederick Brodie MacNutt (26 September 1873 – 17 July 1949) was an Anglican priest and author in the first half of the 20th century. Born in Brighton to Irish parents, MacNutt was educated at St Paul's School, London, and Trinity College, Cambridge. He earned an Athletics Blue whilst there. He was ordained in 1898 and was a curate at Holy Trinity, Beckenham (1898-1901), and St James's Church, Piccadilly (1901-1902). After this he was curate-in-charge of Christ Church, Wimbledon (1902-1903), then vicar of St John’s, Cheltenham (1903-1907), and St Matthew’s, Surbiton (1907-1918). From 1909 to 1918 he was a canon of Southwark Cathedral. While at Surbiton, he served from 1915 to 1918 as a Temporary Chaplain to the Forces (TCF), including lecturing at the Chaplains School at St Omer. George Taylor MacNutt (19 December 1865 – 24 May 1937) was a Canadian businessman and politician. MacNutt served as a Conservative member of the House of Commons of Canada. He was born in Stewiacke, Nova Scotia and became a contractor and lumber merchant. MacNutt attended public school in Nova Scotia, then Truro Academy. He campaigned in the 1911 Nova Scotia provincial election for a seat at Guysborough riding but was not successful. He was first elected to Parliament at the Colchester riding in the 1925 general election. Thomas Russell MacNutt (September 28, 1895 – February 21, 1973) was a merchant and political figure in Saskatchewan. He represented Nipawin from 1952 to 1956 in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan as a Liberal. He was born in Saltcoats, Saskatchewan, the son of Thomas MacNutt and Margaret McFayden, and was educated there and at the College of Agriculture in Saskatoon. MacNutt served in France with the Third Battalion, Canadian Machine Gun Corps during World War I, was commander of the First Battalion, King's Own Rifles of Canada on the Pacific Coast from 1932 to 1938 and also served in the army during World War II. Walter Louis MacNutt (2 June 1910 – 10 August 1996) was a Canadian organist, choir director, and composer. His compositional output includes numerous choral works, songs, pieces for solo organ, and works for orchestra, many of which have been published by companies like Broadcast Music Incorporated, Frederick Harris Music, the Waterloo Music Company, and the Western Music Company. In 1938 his ''Suite for Piano'' was awarded the first Vogt Society prize for Canadian composition. One of his more popular works, the secular song ''Take Me to a Green Isle'', is taken from a poem by H.E. Foster. He also composed many songs to the poems of William Blake. In his later years, he composed music mainly for the Anglicanism, Anglican church, include two ''Missae breves'' and the ''Mass of St James'' (1974).
