Mabel Thurston
Mabel Thurston (22 July 1869 – 1960) was a notable New Zealand nurse, hospital matron and army nursing administrator. Early life She was born in Manea, Cambridgeshire, England on 22 July 1869 to Mary Ann (nee Green) and her husband, Frederick Thurston, a pharmaceutical chemist. She emigrated to New Zealand in 1901 and trained as a nurse at Wellington District Hospital, which meant working 11 hour long days, seven days a week. After passing her examinations and became a registered nurse in December 1904 she stayed on for another year as a sister, before in 1906 she was appointed matron of Grey River Hospital. In 1908 she was appointed matron (also known as lady superintendent) of Christchurch Hospital where she proved to be a popular and capable manager. While in Christchurch took an active part in the Canterbury Trained Nurses' Association from its inception in October 1908 and subsequently became a leading member of the national association. Manea, Cambridgeshire
Manea is a village and civil parish in the District of Fenland District, Fenland, Isle of Ely, Cambridgeshire, England. The population (including Welches Dam) of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 2,088. Landmarks are Manea railway station and RSPB Welches Dam nature reserve on the Ouse Washes. The village's brass band, the Manea Silver Band, was formed in 1882; it meets at Manea Royal British Legion. Manea men's football team compete in local leagues and cup competitions. Nurses' Memorial Chapel
The Nurses' Memorial Chapel at Christchurch Hospital, New Zealand, is registered as a Category I heritage building. The chapel is significant as New Zealand's first hospital chapel, and as the country's only World War I memorial solely dedicated to women, and is worldwide the only hospital chapel dedicated to nurses who died in World War I. History Sibylla Maude and Mabel Thurston, both former matrons of Christchurch Hospital, first thought of a chapel at the hospital. Rose Muir, the matron from 1919 to 1936, wrote to the hospital board in July 1924 reiterating the need for a chapel. This request was approved in principle in January 1925. The hospital board provided the land and paid for the foundation and the basement, and was in turn granted the use of the basement. The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service.
