MTV Braunschweig
Braunschweiger MTV von 1847, commonly known as MTV Braunschweig, is a German sports club based in Braunschweig, Lower Saxony. History MTV Braunschweig was founded as a gymnastics club in 1847 and is the second oldest sports club in Lower Saxony. Like many clubs within the German ''Turner'' movement, MTV Braunschweig was initially committed to the national unification of Germany and the goals of the German revolution of 1848. Originally only open to men, women were allowed to join the club first in 1888. Today MTV is a multi-sports club with departments for association football, athletics, basketball, field hockey, team handball, swimming, table tennis, tennis, volleyball, and others. MTV Braunschweig has been successful in German sports, with the club's athletes having won over 50 national championships in various sports. Ludwig Lachner
Ludwig "Pipin" Lachner (27 July 1910 – 19 May 2003) was a German footballer and manager. Club career Lachner began his career at the Munich-based worker's football club ''FT Gern'' in the Arbeiter-Turn- und Sportbund championship. He switched to 1860 Munich in 1929. In 1934 Lachner left Munich and joined Eintracht Braunschweig, where he played for the next 15 years. After retiring from top-level football in 1949, Lachner continued for a time as player-manager at MTV Braunschweig in the Amateuroberliga Niedersachsen. René Herms
René Herms (17 July 1982 – 9 January 2009) was a German middle-distance runner who specialised in the 800 metres. Herms was born in Dohna, Bezirk Dresden, East Germany. He won the silver medal in 4 × 400 metres relay at the 2000 World Junior Championships, became European junior champion in 2001 and finished seventh at the 2002 European Championships. He also competed at the World Championships in 2003 and 2005 as well as the 2004 Olympic Games without reaching the finals. His personal best time was 1:44.14 minutes, achieved in August 2004 in Munich. He competed for the athletics clubs LSV Pirna and LG Braunschweig. August Hermann
Friedrich August Wilhelm Theodor Hermann (14 September 1835 – 20 February 1906) was a German physical education instructor. He, along with Konrad Koch, introduced the game of association football to Germany from England in 1874. He is known as the Braunschweig "Father of Physical Education." Hermann also wrote and published poetry in the Low German language. Early career Hermann grew up in Lehre, near Braunschweig, and studied to become a teacher. While studying in Wolfenbüttel at the Great School he learned physical education and became an avid gymnast. Teaching and sports He became a school teacher in Dresden and completed additional training as a gym instructor. He moved on to become a physical education teacher at several schools and became dedicated to the Braunschweig men gymnastics club. He also set up an exercise organization outside Braunschweig. Karen Haude
Karen Fröhlich née Haude is a retired German field hockey player. Haude played for the clubs MTV Braunschweig and Eintracht Braunschweig. With Eintracht Braunschweig, she won five German championship titles. She also played 60 games in total for the German national team. With West Germany, Haude won the 1981 Women's Hockey World Cup. She was also called up to the West German squad for the 1980 Summer Olympics. However, due to the 1980 Summer Olympics boycott, the West German team ultimately didn't enter the tournament. Michael Green (born May 5, 1972 in Braunschweig, Lower Saxony) is a former field hockey player from Germany. He began his career at MTV Braunschweig and Braunschweiger THC and later played for Harvestehuder THC in Hamburg. The defender competed at two Summer Olympics. Basketball Löwen Braunschweig ( en, Basketball Lions Braunschweig) is a basketball club based in Braunschweig, Germany. The club currently plays in the Basketball Bundesliga, the top tier of German basketball. The club's home arena is Volkswagen Halle. The Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) (English language: ''Federal Basketball League''), for sponsorship reasons named easyCredit BBL, is the highest level league of professional club basketball in Germany. The league comprises 18 teams. A BBL season is split into a league stage and a playoff stage. At the end of the league stage, the top eight teams qualify for the playoff stage, and the teams positioned in the 17th and 18th places are relegated to a lower-tier league. The playoffs are played in a "Best of five" format. The winning team of the final round are crowned the German Champions of that season. SG Braunschweig is a basketball club based in Braunschweig, Germany. History The team was formed in 1978 as a cooperation between the basketball sections of the clubs FT Braunschweig and MTV Braunschweig. In 2000–01 the club passed its Basketball Bundesliga license to the newly founded team Metabox Braunschweig (now known as Basketball Löwen Braunschweig), and since then functions as a farm team for the Bundesliga side.
