Route 22 is a short north–south Massachusetts state route that connects Route 1A and Route 127 in Beverly and Route 133 in Essex. The entire route is located within Essex County. Route description Route 22 begins in downtown Beverly, where it intersects Cabot Street ( Route 1A). Route 22 proceeds along Essex Street, heading northward out of the downtown area and past the Montserrat MBTA commuter rail station. Route 22 crosses Route 128 at exit 47 (formerly exit 18), and then winds northward into Wenham, making two turns before quickly entering Hamilton. Essex is a coastal town in Essex County, Massachusetts, 26 miles (42 km) north of Boston and 13 miles (21 km) southeast of Newburyport. It is known for its former role as a center of shipbuilding. Route 1A is a north–south state highway in Massachusetts. It is an alternate route to U.S. 1 with three signed sections and two unsigned sections where the highway is concurrent with its parent. Due to the reconfiguration of tunnel interchanges brought on by the completion of the Big Dig, Route 1A is discontinuous in the downtown Boston area. Vehicles entering Downtown Boston via the Sumner Tunnel must take I-93 north to the exit for Government Center and make a U-turn to access the entrance ramp to I-93 south (which silently carries Route 1A south as well) and vice versa. Route 127 is a north–south Massachusetts state route that runs from Beverly to Gloucester. Much of the northern part of the route is in Cape Ann. Route 127's southern terminus is at Route 1A and the southern terminus of Route 22 in Beverly and the northern terminus is at Route 128 in Gloucester. Route description Route 127 begins in Beverly concurrently with Route 22 at Route 1A, just north of the Veteran's Memorial Bridge. Route 133 is a east–west Massachusetts state route that runs from Route 38 and Route 110 in Lowell to Route 127 in Gloucester. Route description Route 133 begins at the junction of Route 38 and Route 110 in Lowell, where Route 110 begins a concurrency with Route 38 northbound. Route 133 heads east from this point, heading through the northern end of Tewksbury, where it has a junction with I-495 at Exit 94. Route 128, known as the Yankee Division Highway, is a state highway in the U.S. state of Massachusetts maintained by the Highway Division of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT). Spanning , it is one of two beltways (the other being Interstate 495) around Boston, and is known as the "inner" beltway, especially around areas where it is or less outside of Boston.
