M. Philip Kahl
Marvin Philip Kahl (September 28, 1934 – December 4, 2012) was an American zoologist who studied birds and elephants. From the 1950s to 1980s, Kahl conducted his avian research on storks, flamingos and spoonbills. During this time period, Kahl worked for various places including the National Audubon Society and Rare Animal Relief Effort. In the 1990s, Kahl switched his research to elephants and continued to study them until the 2010s. Throughout his career, Kahl took wildlife photographs for various publications including ''National Geographic'' and the ''Journal of Zoology.'' Kahl wrote ''Wonders of Storks'' in 1978 and was a co-author of ''Storks, Ibises, and Spoonbills of the World'' in 1992. Apart from his works, Kahl received a fellowship from the National Science Foundation in the 1960s and one from the American Museum of Natural History in the 1970s. Black-faced Spoonbill
The black-faced spoonbill (''Platalea minor'') is a species of wading bird in the ibis and spoonbill family Threskiornithidae, found in eastern Asia. This species has the most restricted distribution of the six spoonbill species, and it is the only one regarded as endangered. Spoonbills are large water birds with dorso-ventrally flattened, spatulate bills. These birds use a tactile method of feeding, wading in the water and sweeping their beaks from side-to-side to detect prey. Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is a National Audubon Society sanctuary located in southwest Florida, north of Naples, Florida and east of Bonita Springs, in the United States. The sanctuary was established to protect one of the largest remaining stands of bald cypress (''Taxodium distichum'') and pond cypress (''T. ascendens'') in North America from extensive logging that was ongoing throughout the 1940s and 1950s. Wood Storks
The wood stork (''Mycteria americana'') is a large American wading bird in the family Ciconiidae (storks), the only member of the family to breed in North America.
