Lusafrica, full name: Productions Lusafrica (French for ''Lusafrica Productions'') is a multinational independent record label company based in Paris, France. The company was founded in 1988 by José da Silva (born in 1959 in Praia, Cape Verde), it was the first multinational record company opened in Cape Verde and one of the first in France. It is the main African independent label in France. The company had originally produced records by artists mainly from Cape Verde and other lusophone countries. Since, the company has recorded by artists from the United States, Cuba, Brazil and France. History Debut and success In 1987, José da Silva (b. 1959 in Praia), then track switcher for SNCF, chose to become a music producer at his expense. During his dinner in Lisbon at the restaurant with Cape Verdean singer Bana, he heard the voice of Cesária Évora for the first time and together proposed. Elida Almeida
Elida Almeida (born 1993) is a Cape Verdean singer. Biography Elida Sofia Cabral Almeida was born in Pedra Badejo in the east of Santiago Island. She spent her childhood years with some difficulty, in the mountains of Santiago. At 17, she sang at church, she listened to the radio, she said on that she grew up on a place without electricity or necessities. She worked on radio commentaries, especially with DJs and presenters. Nancy Vieira
Nancy Vieira (born 1975) is a Cape Verdean singer who was born in Guinea-Bissau and currently resides in Portugal. Biography Vieira was born in 1975 in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau to Cape Verdean parents, she later moved to Cape Verde and her family returned, when she was a child, she immigrated to Lisbon when she was 14. Outside Portugal and Cape Verde, she performed on stage in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, the United States, Angola and a couple of others. ''Nôs Raça'' was her first recorded album. ''Cesária'' is the fifth album by Cesária Évora. The album, consisting of Cape Verdean morna and coladeira songs, was released by Paris-based Lusafrica on 18 July 1995. The album was nominated for a Grammy Award in the World Music category in 1996. It was certified gold in France by SNEP which sold more than 100,000 copies. As of 1997, in United States the album has sold 150,000 copies. Boubacar Traoré (musician)
Boubacar Traoré (born 1942 in Kayes, Mali) is a Malian singer, songwriter, and guitarist. Early fame Traoré first came to prominence in the early 1960s. He had taught himself to play guitar and developed a unique style that blended American blues music, Arab music, and pentatonic structures found in West Africa's Mande cultural region. He was a superstar in Mali and a symbol of the newly independent country (see History of Mali). His songs were immensely popular and he enjoyed regular radio play. However, he made no recordings, and since there were no royalties paid to musicians, he was very poor. Boy Gé Mendes
Gerard "Boy" Mendes (born 1952) is a Senegalese musician of Cape Verdean descent. He was born in Dakar, Senegal and was raised in the city's Cape Verdean diaspora community. As a child, he grew up in a household filled with the sounds of the native '' morna'' and '' coladeira''. But he was also exposed to the music of his adopted land and to the music of Mali, Guinea and other west African countries. His early music career even included singing rock, rhythm & blues, and Cuban music, which were all popular genres in Senegal at the time. Adriano Gonçalves (5 March 1932 – 13 July 2013), known by his stage name Bana and called the " King of Morna", was a Cape Verdean singer and performer of the morna style, the plaintive, melodic lament which is a staple musical style of the country. Biography He was born in Mindelo on 5 March 1932, some sources said he was born on 11 March. In his childhood years, he was surrounded by music with local singers. At age four, he appeared with local singers. Bana, who was over seven feet tall, began his musical career during Portuguese colonial rule, when he worked as a handyman and bodyguard for the legendary Cabo Verdean composer and performer, B.
