''Lupin the 3rd Part I: The Classic Adventures'' is a Japanese anime television series produced by TMS Entertainment. Part of the ''Lupin III'' franchise, it is the first anime television adaptation of the ''Lupin III'' manga series created by Monkey Punch. The series was originally broadcast as simply on Yomiuri TV between October 24, 1971 and March 26, 1972. Among English-speaking fans, this series was commonly known as the "Green Jacket" series in reference to Lupin's outfit, but more recently it is now known as "the first Green Jacket" series because of the outfit's return in ''Part 6''. Premise Lupin III, grandson of the gentleman thief Arsène Lupin, is an internationally wanted thief. His right-hand man is Daisuke Jigen, an expert marksman who can shoot a target within 0.3 seconds. ''Lupinus'', commonly known as lupin, lupine, or regionally bluebonnet etc., is a genus of plants in the legume family Fabaceae. The genus includes over 199 species, with centers of diversity in North and South America. Smaller centers occur in North Africa and the Mediterranean. They are widely cultivated, both as a food source and as ornamental plants, but are invasive to some areas. Description The species are mostly herbaceous perennial plants tall, but some are annual plants and a few are shrubs up to tall. An exception is the ''chamis de monte'' (''Lupinus jaimehintoniana'') of Oaxaca in Mexico, which is a tree up to tall. Lupins have soft green to grey-green leaves which may be coated in silvery hairs, often densely so. Daisuke Jigen
is a fictional character created by Monkey Punch for his manga series ''Lupin III'', which debuted in ''Weekly Manga Action'' on August 10, 1967. Jigen is the marksman, aide-de-camp and best friend of Arsène Lupin III. Along with colleague Goemon Ishikawa XIII, he joins Lupin in pursuit of riches acquired typically by theft. Traveling across the globe, Jigen has garnered fame as a gunman with a wildly capable speed and accuracy. Creation and conception According to Monkey Punch, Jigen was created as a New York raised American gangster based on actor James Coburn, especially his role in ''The Magnificent Seven''. When the series was adapted into animation, the role was portrayed by Kiyoshi Kobayashi, the voice actor responsible for dubbing many of Coburn's roles into Japanese. The character's name comes from Monkey Punch's love for the word "dimension," which translates to "jigen" in Japanese. Gorō Naya
was a Japanese actor, voice actor, narrator and theatre director from Hakodate, Hokkaidō. He and his brother were two of seven children, and was a drop-out of the legal education division of Ritsumeikan University. He was connected to Theatre Echo, and was the older brother of actor and voice actor Rokurō Naya. Naya is best known for providing the voice of Inspector Koichi Zenigata in the ''Lupin III'' franchise and for dubbing over the voices of actors Clark Gable, Charlton Heston, John Cleese, Lee Van Cleef, Martin Landau and Robert Ryan in the Japanese-language editions of their films. He died on 5 March 2013, at age 83, due to chronic respiratory failure. Yasuo Yamada
was a Japanese actor, voice actor and narrator. Career Yamada left the faculty of literature of Waseda University, and had performed in many stage, radio, and television productions. He appeared in performances of plays by Hisashi Inoue. His most famous role was Arsène Lupin III from the ''Lupin III'' series, starting in 1971 and ending in 1995. He was also the official Japanese dubbing voice actor of Clint Eastwood and Jean-Paul Belmondo. On March 19, 1995 Yasuo Yamada died of a brain hemorrhage at the age of 62. At the end of the credits of the film ''Farewell to Nostradamus'' (the first Lupin film without Yamada), there is a tribute: "To Yasuo Yamada, Eternal Lupin the Third: Thank you!"
