Lodestar (Shirley Collins Album)
''Lodestar'' is the seventh studio album by the English folk musician, Shirley Collins. The album is Collins's first in 38 years, making it one of the longest gaps between studio albums. Background After being one of the most significant figures in the English Folk Revival of the 1960s, Collins withdrew from music in the late 1970s when she developed dysphonia, attributed to being left by her second husband, Ashley Hutchings. In 2014 she was coaxed back into performance by Current 93's David Tibet for a concert at Union Chapel in North London. Following this performance, Collins started making a new album at her house in Lewes, recorded by Stephen Thrower and Ossian Brown of the group Cyclobe. Some of the album's recording was filmed, and included in the documentary ''The Ballad of Shirley Collins''. Reception ''Lodestar'' received widespread acclaim from music critics. Shirley Collins
Shirley Elizabeth Collins MBE (born 5 July 1935) is an English folk singer who was a significant contributor to the English Folk Revival of the 1960s and 1970s. She often performed and recorded with her sister Dolly, whose accompaniment on piano and portative organ created unique settings for Shirley's plain, austere singing style. Biography Early life Shirley Collins was born in Hastings, East Sussex, England on 5 July 1935. She grew up, with her older sister Dolly, in the area, in a family which kept alive a great love of traditional song. Songs learnt from their grandfather and from their mother's sister, Grace Winborn, were to be important in the sisters' repertoire throughout their career. On leaving school, at the age of 17, Collins enrolled at a teachers' training college in Tooting, south London. Union Chapel, Islington
Union Chapel is a working church, live entertainment venue and charity drop-in centre for the homeless in Islington, London, England. Built in the late 19th century in the Gothic revival style, the church is Grade I-listed. It is at the north end of Upper Street, near Highbury Fields. As a venue Union Chapel hosts live music, film, spoken word and comedy events. There are around 250 events per year. It was voted London's Best Live Music Venue by readers of '' Time Out'' magazine in 2002, 2012 and again in 2014. It has a reputation for great acoustics, thanks to its design. ''The Wire'' (or simply ''Wire'') is a British music magazine publishing out of London, which has been issued monthly in print since 1982. Its website launched in 1997, and an online archive of its entire back catalog became available to subscribers in 2013. Since 1985, the magazine's annual year-in-review issue, Rewind, has named an album or release of the year based on critics' ballots. Originally, ''The Wire'' covered the British jazz scene with an emphasis on avant-garde and free jazz. Metacritic is a website that review aggregator, aggregates reviews of films, TV shows, music albums, video games and formerly, books. For each product, the scores from each review are averaged (a weighted arithmetic mean, weighted average). Metacritic was created by Jason Dietz, Marc Doyle, and Julie Doyle Roberts in 1999. The site provides an excerpt from each review and hyperlinks to its source. A color of green, yellow or red summarizes the critics' recommendations. It is regarded as the foremost online review aggregation site for the video game industry. Metacritic's scoring converts each review into a percentage, either mathematically from the mark given, or what the site decides subjectively from a qualitative review. The Ballad Of Shirley Collins
''The Ballad of Shirley Collins'' is a 2017 British feature documentary directed by Rob Curry and Tim Plester. The film follows the return of 80 year old folk singer Shirley Collins to the limelight as she records '' Lodestar'', her first album for 37 years, juxtaposing this with the noted ' Southern Journey' song-collecting trip Collins undertook in 1959 with noted ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax. The music recorded on the trip received renewed attention in 2000 with the release of the Coen Brothers' O Brother Where Art Thou, the soundtrack of which was built around the music archive from the trip. The film premiered at the BFI London Film Festival in October 2017, before a UK theatrical release the same month. Its international premiere was at the Rotterdam International Film Festival in March 2018, followed by screenings including CPH:DOX and Revelation Perth. Cyclobe
Cyclobe (1999–present) are a music duo formed by Stephen Thrower and Ossian Brown. They make hallucinatory electronic soundscapes by mixing sampled and heavily synthesized sounds with acoustic arrangements for a variety of instruments including hurdy-gurdy, border pipes, duduk and clarinet. Their approach draws upon diverse forms, including acousmatic, drone music, sound collage, folk and progressive rock. Background Thrower and Brown met in the early 1990s through their mutual association with Coil. Ossian Brown
Ossian Brown (born 3 April 1969, London, England) is an English musician and artist, most notable for being a member of the groups Coil and Cyclobe. He joined Coil in 1999 and remained with them until the band’s cessation following the death of singer John Balance in 2004. He worked on several albums and performed live with the group at The Royal Festival Hall, The Barbican in London, and numerous venues throughout Europe. Brown formed Cyclobe in 1996 with his partner Stephen Thrower (also a one-time member of Coil). They released their first album ''Luminous Darkness'' in 1999, named after a series of paintings by their friend, the filmmaker Derek Jarman. Stephen Thrower (born 9 December 1963) is an English musician and author. Musical career Early career In 1980, Thrower formed the group Possession with Victor Watkins and Anna Virginia War and they released the album ''The Thin White Arms, Obtusely Angled At The Elbow, Methodically Dipping And Emerging'' in 1984. Coil After communicating via a series of letters, Thrower worked with the band Coil in 1984 and 1985. In late 1987, Thrower became a full-time member of the band. He contributed to the albums '' Gold Is the Metal with the Broadest Shoulders'', '' Love's Secret Domain'', and '' Stolen & Contaminated Songs''. Lewes
Lewes () is the county town of East Sussex, England. It is the police and judicial centre for all of Sussex and is home to Sussex Police, East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service, Lewes Crown Court and HMP Lewes. David Tibet
David Tibet (born David Michael Bunting; 5 March 1960) is a British poet and artist who founded the music group Current 93, of which he is the only full-time member. He was given the name "Tibet" by Genesis P-Orridge, and in January 2005 he announced that he would revert to the name David Michael, although he continues to use the well-known "Tibet" in his public career to date. Career David Bunting was born in Batu Gajah, Perak, Malaysia. Early in his career, he collaborated with Psychic TV and 23 Skidoo. Tibet left Psychic TV in 1983 and founded Current 93 the same year.
