''Lobster Telephone'' (also known as ''Aphrodisiac Telephone'') is a Surrealist object, created by Salvador Dalà in 1936 for the English poet Edward James (1907–1984), a leading collector of surrealist art. In his 1942 book ''The Secret Life of Salvador DalÃ'', Dalà wrote teasingly of his demand to know why, when he asked for a grilled lobster in a restaurant, he was never presented with a boiled telephone.DalÃ, S. & Chevalier, H. Surrealism
Surrealism is a cultural movement that developed in Europe in the aftermath of World War I in which artists depicted unnerving, illogical scenes and developed techniques to allow the unconscious mind to express itself. Its aim was, according to leader André Breton, to "resolve the previously contradictory conditions of dream and reality into an absolute reality, a super-reality", or ''surreality.''
