Curling is a sport in which players slide stones on a sheet of ice toward a target area which is segmented into four concentric circles. It is related to bowls, boules, and shuffleboard. Two teams, each with four players, take turns sliding heavy, polished granite stones, also called ''rocks'', across the ice ''curling sheet'' toward the ''house'', a circular target marked on the ice. Each team has eight stones, with each player throwing two. The purpose is to accumulate the highest score for a ''game''; points are scored for the stones resting closest to the centre of the house at the conclusion of each ''end'', which is completed when both teams have thrown all of their stones once. A game usually consists of eight or ten ends. The player can induce a curved path, described as ''curl'', by causing the stone to slowly rotate as it slides. The Brantford Golf & Country Club is a private golf course and curling club located in Brantford, Ontario, Canada. It is the fourth oldest golf club in North America having been founded in 1879. The course is ranked 46 in 2010 Scoregolf Top 100 Courses in Canada. Course history The first course consisted of four holes and was located at what was known as Vinegar Hill. Sometime after 1883 with the popularity of golf growing, the course was moved to Glenmount which is located north of Henry Street and east of West Street. The property is now occupied by Arrowdale Golf Club. In 1906, the course moved to the current site which is located next to Glenhyrst Art Gallery and along the Grand River. The course consisted of 9-holes until 1919 when the membership decided to purchase an additional 69 acres to expand to 18-holes. The Fort Rouge Curling Club is a curling club located in the Fort Rouge district of Winnipeg, Manitoba. History The Fort Rouge Curling Club joined the Manitoba Curling Association in 1915, while the Fort Rouge Ladies Curling Club was one of the founding members of the Manitoba Ladies Curling Association in 1924. In 1919, the first Fort Rouge Curling Club rink was built at the corner of Kylemore Avenue and Osborne Street. This building would later be demolished, and a new facility was built in 1959, a few blocks away on Daly Street where it stands today. The Crestwood Curling Club is a curling club located in the Crestwood, Edmonton, Crestwood neighbourhood of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The club was founded in 1954 on the location of Crestwood Park in west Edmonton. On February 16, 1955 the club opened its doors, and its first feature game involved the Brier, Brier champion Matt Baldwin take on Ole Olson. New additions to the club would be added in 1964. The Cornwall Curling Club is a curling club in Cornwall, Prince Edward Island, Canada. History The Cornwall Village Council decided in 1979 to build a curling rink in the community, and construction began in 1981. The club officially opened in January 1982. Despite a number of hiccups in its first season, it did not take long for the club to produce a provincial champion. Nancy Coffin, Sharon Cole, Pam Sherren, and Heather Worth won the 1983 Prince Edward Island Junior Women's curling championship. Chatham Granite Club
The Chatham Granite Club is a historic 5-sheet curling club in Chatham, Ontario, Canada. It is located in downtown Chatham on William Street North. History The Chatham Granite was founded in 1862 as the Chatham Curling Club. For the first 30 years, the club played on the Thames River. In 1892, they settled at the club's current location, and a new building was built in 1903. Artificial ice was installed in 1929 when the curling rink was remodeled into a skating, hockey and curling arena. In 1939, the club was renovated into just a curling rink. In 1965 a new arena structure was built out of British Columbia cedar, as it is seen today. In 1970 a new urethane pad under the ice was installed. In 1977 a new addition was completed at a cost of $180,000, locker rooms and the upstairs bar and lounge were enlarged by 15 feet. History Early golf in Kingston, the Kingston Golf Club Cataraqui G&CC was established in 1917. Its founding arose from development pressures in downtown Kingston. The new club was built on land that was then on the western edge of settlement for the city and district, following the World War I-era construction of the LaSalle Causeway and provincial highway, across the Cataraqui River as it feeds into Lake Ontario, in downtown Kingston.
