Chatham Granite Club
The Chatham Granite Club is a historic 5-sheet curling club in Chatham, Ontario, Canada. It is located in downtown Chatham on William Street North. History The Chatham Granite was founded in 1862 as the Chatham Curling Club. For the first 30 years, the club played on the Thames River. In 1892, they settled at the club's current location, and a new building was built in 1903. Artificial ice was installed in 1929 when the curling rink was remodeled into a skating, hockey and curling arena. In 1939, the club was renovated into just a curling rink. In 1965 a new arena structure was built out of British Columbia cedar, as it is seen today. In 1970 a new urethane pad under the ice was installed. In 1977 a new addition was completed at a cost of $180,000, locker rooms and the upstairs bar and lounge were enlarged by 15 feet. Curling
Curling is a sport in which players slide stones on a sheet of ice toward a target area which is segmented into four concentric circles. It is related to bowls, boules, and shuffleboard. Two teams, each with four players, take turns sliding heavy, polished granite stones, also called ''rocks'', across the ice ''curling sheet'' toward the ''house'', a circular target marked on the ice. Each team has eight stones, with each player throwing two. The purpose is to accumulate the highest score for a ''game''; points are scored for the stones resting closest to the centre of the house at the conclusion of each ''end'', which is completed when both teams have thrown all of their stones once. A game usually consists of eight or ten ends. The player can induce a curved path, described as ''curl'', by causing the stone to slowly rotate as it slides. Thames River (Ontario)
The Thames River is located in southwestern Ontario, Canada. The Thames flows southwestly through southwestern Ontario, from the Town of Tavistock through the cities of Woodstock, London and Chatham to Lighthouse Cove on Lake St. Clair. Its drainage basin is . The Brier
The Tim Hortons Brier, or simply (and more commonly) the Brier (''french: Le Brier''), is the annual Canadian men's curling championship, sanctioned by Curling Canada. The current event name refers to its main sponsor, the Tim Hortons coffee and donut shop chain. "Brier" originally referred to a brand of tobacco sold by the event's first sponsor, the Macdonald Tobacco Company. The Brier has been held since 1927, traditionally during the month of March. The winner of the Brier goes on to represent Canada at the World Curling Championships of the same year. 1949 Macdonald Brier
The 1949 Macdonald Brier, the Canadian men's national curling championship, was held from March 7 to 11, 1949 at Hamilton Forum in Hamilton, Ontario. Team Manitoba, who was skipped by Ken Watson captured the Brier Tankard by finishing round robin play unbeaten with a 9-0 record. This was Manitoba's twelfth Brier championship and the sixth time that a team finished the Brier unbeaten. Watson would become the first skip to win the Brier three times as his rink won previously in 1936 and 1942. This was the first Brier in which two teams ( Manitoba and British Columbia) entered the final draw unbeaten and the first Brier since 1936 to feature a "winner take all" match in the round robin to decide the Brier champion. 1953 Macdonald Brier
The 1953 Macdonald Brier, the Canadian men's national curling championship, was held from March 2 to 7, 1953 at Sudbury Arena in Sudbury, Ontario. A total of 12,500 fans attended the event. Both Team Manitoba and Team Quebec finished round robin play tied with 8-2 records, necessitating a tiebreaker playoff to determine the Brier championship. Manitoba, who was skipped by Ab Gowanlock defeated Quebec in the playoff 8–6 to capture the Brier Tankard. This was Manitoba's fourteenth Brier championship and Gowanlock's second title as a skip with his other title coming in 1938. The 15 years between Brier championships by Gowanlock set a record for the longest gap between Brier championships by a skip, which to date is still a record. Peter Gilbert (curler)
Eric Peter Gilbert (born 31 July 1983), known as Peter Gilbert, is a Welsh former footballer and current coach. A defender, Gilbert played in the Football League for Plymouth Argyle, Leicester City, Sheffield Wednesday, Doncaster Rovers, Oldham Athletic, Northampton Town and Southend United, also appearing in the Conference for Lincoln City and briefly in the Northern Premier League for Goole. He represented Wales at under-21 level. Gilbert is currently coaching Aston Villa Under-21s. Career Gilbert began his career at Birmingham City as a trainee but failed to make a first team appearance. He did captain the academy side during his time with the Blues and made many appearances for the reserves. His progress was hampered by a serious knee injury. TSC Stores Tankard
The Ontario Tankard is the Southern Ontario provincial championship for men's curling. The winner represents Team Ontario at the Tim Hortons Brier. The tournament is overseen by CurlON (formerly the Ontario Curling Association). Northern Ontario has its own provincial championship, known as the Northern Ontario Men's Provincial Curling Championship.
