This is a list of members of the Senate of Canada in the 35th Parliament of Canada. The province of Quebec has 24 Senate divisions which are constitutionally mandated. In all other provinces, a Senate division is strictly an optional designation of the senator's own choosing, and has no real constitutional or legal standing. A senator who does not choose a special senate division is designated a senator for the province at large. Names in bold indicate senators in the 26th Canadian Ministry. Senate Of Canada
The Senate of Canada (french: region=CA, Sénat du Canada) is the upper house of the Parliament of Canada. Together with the Crown and the House of Commons, they comprise the bicameral legislature of Canada. The Senate is modelled after the British House of Lords with members appointed by the governor general on the advice of the prime minister. The explicit basis on which appointment is made and the chamber's size is set, at 105 members, is by province or territory assigned to 'divisions'. The Constitution divides provinces of Canada geographically among four regions, which are represented equally. Senatorial appointments were originally for life; since 1965, they have been subject to a mandatory retirement age of 75. While the Senate is the upper house of parliament and the House of Commons is the lower house, this does not imply the former is more powerful than the latter. James Balfour (Canadian Politician)
R. James Balfour (22 May 1928 – 12 December 1999) was first elected in the 1972 federal election as a Progressive Conservative Member of Parliament for Regina East, Saskatchewan. He also served in the Senate of Canada from 13 September 1979 until his death. He was born in Regina, Saskatchewan. Guy Charbonneau
Guy Charbonneau (June 21, 1922 – January 18, 1998) was a Canadian senator who was the longest serving sSpeaker of the Canadian Senate, serving from 1984 to 1993. During his tenure, amendments to the Standing Orders of the Senate extended the powers of the speaker. Chabonneau was born in Trois-Rivières, Quebec. He received his Bachelor of Arts from the Université de Montréal, and pursued further studies in economics at McGill University. He served during World War II in the Royal Canadian Air Force. After being demobilized, he joined the insurance industry. He rose to the position of vice-president and director of Peerless Insurance Agencies in 1948. He became president in 1963. Solange Chaput-Rolland
Solange Chaput-Rolland, (May 14, 1919 – November 1, 2001) was a Canadian journalist, author, lecturer, politician, and Senator. Born in Montreal, the daughter of Émile Chaput and Rosalie Loranger, she received her education from the Couvent d'Outremont, the Sorbonne and the Institut Catholique de Paris. Her brother, Yves Chaput was the husband of Françoise Poliquin, daughter of Jean Poliquin, grandfather of Jean-Nicolas De Surmont. During the 1950s she worked as a journalist for the CBC with a young Jeanne Sauvé with whom she remained friends until Sauvé's death. In 1979, she was elected to the National Assembly of Quebec in a by-election in the riding of Prevost. She was defeated in 1981. Pat Carney
Patricia Carney (born May 26, 1935) is a former Canadian politician who served as a member of parliament from 1980 to 1988 and as a Senator from 1990 to 2008. A member of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada, she first ran for the House of Commons of Canada during the 1979 Canadian federal election, but was defeated. She ran again in the election the following year and won, representing the district of Vancouver Centre. After winning a second term in the 1984 elections, she held the cabinet positions of minister of Energy, Mines and Resources from 1984 to 1986 and minister of International Trade from 1986 to 1988 under Prime Minister Brian Mulroney. John Buchanan (Canadian Politician)
John MacLennan Buchanan (April 22, 1931 – October 3, 2019) was a Canadian lawyer and former politician who served as the 20th premier of Nova Scotia from 1978 to 1990 and as a member of the Senate of Canada from 1990 to 2006. Early life Buchanan was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia, the son of Flora Isabel Campbell and Murdoch William Buchanan. He graduated from Mount Allison University in 1954 with a Bachelor of Science degree and a Certificate in Engineering. Peter Bosa (May 2, 1927 – December 10, 1998) was a Canadian politician. He was a Senator from 1977 to 1998. Born in Friuli, Italy, he immigrated to Canada in 1948. He started working in his father's clothing shop as an apprentice cutter. He later became an insurance executive. He was an alderman for the City of York for seven years. Mark Lorne Bonnell (January 4, 1923 – October 9, 2006) was a Canadian physician, provincial politician and senator. Born in Hopefield, Prince Edward Island, the son of Lottie and Harry Bonnell, he received his Doctor of Medicine from Dalhousie University in 1949. He practiced medicine in Murray River. In 1951, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island representing the district of 4th Kings. A member of the Prince Edward Island Liberal Party, he was re-elected in 1955, 1959, 1962, 1966, and 1970. Eric Arthur Berntson (May 16, 1941 – September 23, 2018) was a Canadian politician.
