This article lists political parties in Panama. Panama has a multi-party system. Although there are three major political parties, no one party often has a chance of gaining power alone, and parties must work with each other to form coalition governments. Parties with less than 30,000 members are not recognized by the Tribunal Electoral, and as a result, they are not able to participate in Panama's general elections. Panama
Panama ( , ; es, link=no, Panamá ), officially the Republic of Panama ( es, República de Panamá), is a transcontinental country spanning the southern part of North America and the northern part of South America. It is bordered by Costa Rica to the west, Colombia to the southeast, the Caribbean Sea to the north, and the Pacific Ocean to the south. Its capital and largest city is Panama City, whose metropolitan area is home to nearly half the country's million people. Panama was inhabited by indigenous tribes before Spanish colonists arrived in the 16th century. It broke away from Spain in 1821 and joined the Republic of Gran Colombia, a union of Nueva Granada, Ecuador, and Venezuela. People's Party (Panama)
The People's Party ( es, Partido Popular, until 2001 the Christian Democratic Party of Panama) is a Panamanian Christian democratic political party. Beginning in 1956, as Social Democratic Action, it was made up of middle-class professionals, intellectuals and students, with support from trade unions, particularly the Federation of Christian Workers. The politics of Panama take place in a framework of a presidential representative democratic republic with multi-party system, whereby the President of Panama is both head of state and head of government. Executive power is exercised by the president. Legislative power is vested in the National Assembly. The Judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature. The Independent Social Alternative Party ( es, Partido Alternativa Independiente Social; PAIS) is a conservative and evangelical political party in Panama. The November 29 National Liberation Movement (in Spanish: ''Movimiento de Liberación Nacional 29 de noviembre'') (MLN-29) is a Marxist-Leninist party in Panama that was founded in 1970.
