Flag Of Dominica
The flag of Dominica was adopted on 3 November 1978, with some small changes having been made in 1981, 1988, and 1990. The original flag was designed by playwright Alwin Bully in early 1978 as the country prepared for independence. It is one of only three national flags (the other two being El Salvador and Nicaragua) that currently use purple. History and design The flag, adopted in 1978, features the national bird emblem, the sisserou parrot (''Amazona imperialis''), which also appears on the coat of arms granted on 21 July 1961. This parrot, endemic to Dominica, is an endangered species with a population of only 250–350 individuals. The green field represents the lush vegetation of the island. The cross represents the Trinity and Christianity, with its three colours symbolising the natives, the fertile soil, and the pure water. Patricia Scotland, Baroness Scotland Of Asthal
Patricia Janet Scotland, Baroness Scotland of Asthal, (born 19 August 1955), is a British diplomat, barrister and politician, serving as the sixth secretary-general of the Commonwealth of Nations. She was elected at the 2015 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting and took office on 1 April 2016. She is the first woman to hold the post. She was elevated to the House of Lords in 1997 and, as a British Labour Party politician, served in ministerial positions within the UK Government, most notably as the Attorney General for England and Wales and Advocate General for Northern Ireland. She is a dual citizen of the United Kingdom and Dominica, where she was born. Asquith Xavier
Asquith Camile Xavier (18 July 1920 – 18 June 1980) was a West Indian-born Briton who ended a Racial segregation in the United Kingdom, colour bar at British Railways in London by fighting to become the first non-white train guard at Euston railway station in 1966. Trevor Phillips, when chairman of the Commission for Racial Equality, said in 2006: "Asquith's stand against discrimination brought to light the inadequacy of early race discrimination laws and persistent widespread discrimination faced by ethnic minorities." Kalinago Territory
The Kalinago Territory, previously known as the Carib Reserve or Carib Territory, is a district in the Caribbean island-nation of Dominica. It was established for the indigenous Kalinago people who inhabited the region prior to European colonization and settlement. The Kalinago Territory was officially formed by British colonial authorities in 1903, in a remote and mountainous area of Dominica's Atlantic coast. Its population remained largely isolated from the rest of the island throughout most of the 20th century, with only a ceremonial chief and no other formal self-governance. An incident later known as "the Carib War" escalated from a brief skirmish in the Territory in 1930, when law enforcement attempted to crack down on smuggling, to a political controversy ending with the abolition of the post of chief. Whitney Mélinard
Whitney Leah Mélinard (born 2001) is a Kalinago activist from Dominica. She is the founder of the Kalinago Ripple Effect Initiative to promote solutions to social issues in the Kalinago Territory. Biography Mélinard is from the village of Mahaut River in the Kalinago Territory. She attended Sineku Primary School and Castle Bruce Secondary School. After sitting for the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate exams in 2018, she entered the LEAD Institute to study law. In 2017, Hurricane Maria damaged much infrastructure in Dominica; several parts of the island, including the Kalinago Territory, still lacked wireless internet service in 2020. In spite of this limitation, the government mandated online learning for students during the COVID-19 pandemic. In June 2020, Mélinard released a video criticizing the unfairness of this situation. Kellyn George
Kellyn George is from Dominica and in 2013 created a support foundation to help people with sickle cell anemia in her homeland. In 2015, she was awarded Queen's Young Leader Award for her activism in changing the lives of people in her community. Biography Kellyn George is a Dominican from the village of Mahaut. In 2006 she earned a double associate degree from Dominica State College in chemistry and biology and went on to study at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas, from 2006 to 2008. From 2008 to 2010, George studied biology at Barry University and in 2011 her research team was the first-place winner of the Biology S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Award at the 3rd Annual S.T.E.M. Karmapa
The Karmapa (honorific title '' His Holiness the Gyalwa'' ½¢à¾’ྱལ་བ་, Victorious One''Karmapa'', more formally as ''Gyalwang'' ½¢à¾’ྱལ་དབང་ཀརྨ་པ་, King of Victorious Ones''Karmapa'', and informally as the ''Karmapa Lama'') is the head of the Karma Kagyu, the largest sub-school of the Kagyu (བཀའ་བརྒྱུད, ), itself one of the four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism. Karmapa was Tibet's first consciously incarnating lama. The historical seat of the Karmapas is Tsurphu Monastery in the Tolung valley of Tibet. Ogyen Trinley Dorje
Ogyen Trinley Dorje (, ; born 26 June 1985), also written as Urgyen Trinley Dorje () is a claimant to the title of 17th Karmapa. The Karmapa is head of the Karma Kagyu school, one of the four main schools of Tibetan Buddhism. Ogyen Trinley Dorje and Thaye Dorje are the persisting claimants to that office and title. Biography Ogyen Trinley Rinpoche was born Apo Gaga in 1985 in Lhatok Township, Chamdo County, Tibet Autonomous Region, to nomadic parents. Emmanuel Christopher Loblack
Emmanuel Christopher Loblack O.B.E. (August 29, 1898- June 3, 1995) was a Dominican trade unionist and politician. Trade union Loblack was raised in the community of Grand Bay, Dominica. He was a mason and builder by trade; he was employed by the Public Works Department in 1939, and this job would be the impetus that would begin his long political career. In 1939, Loblack met with London's Moyne Commission, who were visiting the island to investigate conditions in Dominica. He, along with several other people, appeared before the commission and took its members to view areas of Roseau. He made complaints about wage rates and the working conditions that tenant farmers were working in. One member of the commission, Lord Citrine, encouraged the establishment of a trade union, which he had also suggested done in other territories. Edward Oliver LeBlanc
Edward Oliver Le Blanc (October 3, 1923 – October 29, 2004) was a Dominican politician. He served as the chief minister of Dominica from January 1961 to March 1, 1967 and as the first premier of Dominica. Life and career Le Blanc was born in Vieille Case. He joined the Dominica Labour Party in 1957. He joined the government of the Federation of the West Indies in Trinidad in 1958, but returned to Dominica later to become the leader of his party. He won a seat in the House of Assembly in 1961. Le Blanc served as chief minister of Dominica from January 1961 to March 1, 1967. In March 1967, when the British granted Dominica more self-government, Le Blanc became premier. Ronald Green (Dominica)
Ronald Milner Green is a Dominican politician who has served as the head of the United Workers' Party (UWP). In that capacity, Green was also the Leader of the Opposition of Dominica from 2005 until 2009, when he lost his seat in the House of Assembly in the general election. Green is now serving in the Assembly as an appointed senator. Career Green holds a B.S. Degree in Health and Physical Education from the City College of New York, an MA in Education from Manhattan College awarded in 1962 in addition to pre-doctoral level studies at Columbia University. He was employed by various local NGOs before he first entered Parliament as MP for the La Plaine constituency in the 1995 general election.
