List Of People Executed In Alabama
The following is a list of people executed by the U.S. state of Alabama since 1983. All of the 70 people (69 men and 1 woman) have been executed at the Holman Correctional Facility, near Atmore, Alabama. All executions since December 2002 have been by lethal injection. In 2021, the Alabama Department of Corrections announced it had constructed a facility at Holman to carry out executions by means of nitrogen hypoxia. Prior to 1983, an 18-year moratorium on executions was observed under the direction of the Supreme Court of the United States. Don Siegelman
Donald Eugene Siegelman ( ; born February 24, 1946) is a former American politician, lawyer and convicted felon who was the 51st governor of Alabama from 1999 to 2003. A member of the Democratic Party, as of , Siegelman is the last Democrat, as well as the only Catholic, to serve as Governor of Alabama. Siegelman is the only person in Alabama's history to be elected to serve in all four of the top statewide elected offices: Secretary of State, Attorney General, Lieutenant Governor and Governor. He served in Alabama politics for 26 years. Walter Moody
Walter Leroy Moody Jr. (March 24, 1935 – April 19, 2018) was an American convicted murderer who was sentenced to death and executed in Alabama for the 1989 letter bomb murder of Robert S. Vance, a U.S. federal judge serving on the Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit. When Moody was executed by lethal injection in April 2018, he became the oldest death row inmate to be executed since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976. Background Moody was born on March 24, 1935, in Rex, Georgia, and grew up in Fort Valley. He grew up as the oldest of three children and spent much of his time "tinkering with machinery". He graduated from Peach County High School in 1953, and held a multitude of military positions in the years to 1961. Following his departure from the military, Moody resumed his education. Robert Melson (murderer)
On April 16, 1994, three employees were shot and killed and a fourth employee was seriously injured at a Popeyes restaurant in Gadsden, Alabama. The perpetrators, Robert Bryant Melson (June 5, 1971 – June 8, 2017) and Cuhuatemoc Hinricky Peraita (born May 19, 1976), robbed the restaurant of over $2,100, led the four employees into a freezer, and then shot all four of them. Melson was sentenced to death for the crime and Peraita received a life sentence; however, he was later sentenced to death for killing another inmate in prison. Melson was executed in 2017 and Peraita remains on death row.
