The following is a list of known orogenies organised by continent, starting with the oldest at the top. The organization of this article is along present-day continents that do not necessarily reflect the geography contemporary to the orogenies. Note that some orogenies encompass more than one continent and might have different names in each continent. Likewise some very large orogenies include a number of sub-orogenies. As with other geological phenomena orogenies are often subject to different and changing interpretations regarding to their age, type and associated paleogeography. In some interpretations, especially in the older literature, the term orogeny is equivalent to a long "Episode" of basin formation and deposition of sediments (with durations of hundreds of millions of years), ending with deformation (sometimes including metamorphism) of these deposits. Orogeny
Orogeny is a mountain building process. An orogeny is an event that takes place at a convergent plate margin when plate motion compresses the margin. An ''orogenic belt'' or ''orogen'' develops as the compressed plate crumples and is uplifted to form one or more mountain ranges. This involves a series of geological processes collectively called orogenesis. These include both structural deformation of existing continental crust and the creation of new continental crust through volcanism. Magma rising in the orogen carries less dense material upwards while leaving more dense material behind, resulting in compositional differentiation of Earth's lithosphere ( crust and uppermost mantle). Dabie-Sulu Orogeny
The Dabie-Sulu orogeny also termed Qinling-Dabie-Sulu or Dabie Shan-Sulu was a mountain building event in the Triassic from 240 to 220 million years ago caused by the collision of the North China and South China cratons. It extends 2000 kilometers (1250 miles) from the Tanlu fault zone between Shanghai and Wuhan in modern-day China to the Qaidam basin north of the Tibetan Plateau. Description Typically 50 to 100 kilometers wide the orogeny contains the small South Qinling terrane. In fact, the Dabie-Sulu orogen is part of the larger Central China orogeny, extending through the Kunlun Range, Qinling Range, Tongbai-Dabie Range. Cambrian
The Cambrian Period ( ; sometimes symbolized C with bar, Ꞓ) was the first geological period of the Paleozoic Era, and of the Phanerozoic Eon. The Cambrian lasted 53.4 million years from the end of the preceding Ediacaran Period 538.8 million years ago (mya) to the beginning of the Ordovician Period mya. Armorican Terrane
The Armorican terrane, Armorican terrane assemblage, or simply Armorica, was a microcontinent or group of continental fragments that rifted away from Gondwana towards the end of the Silurian and collided with Laurussia towards the end of the Carboniferous during the Variscan orogeny. The name is taken from Armorica, the Gaulish name for a large part of northwestern France that includes Brittany, as this matches closely to the present location of the rock units that form the main part of this terrane. The Indian Plate (or India Plate) is a minor tectonic plate straddling the equator in the Eastern Hemisphere.
