Sherbrooke
Sherbrooke ( ; ) is a city in southern Quebec, Canada. It is at the confluence of the Saint-François and Magog rivers in the heart of the Estrie administrative region. Sherbrooke is also the name of a territory equivalent to a regional county municipality (TE) and census division (CD) of Quebec, coextensive with the city of Sherbrooke. With 172,950 residents at the Canada 2021 Census, It is the sixth largest city in the province and the 30th largest in Canada. The Sherbrooke Census Metropolitan Area had 227,398 inhabitants, making it the fourth largest metropolitan area in Quebec and 19th in Canada. Joseph Gibb Robertson
Joseph Gibb Robertson (1 January 1820 – 13 March 1899) was a Scottish-born merchant, farmer and political figure in Quebec. He represented Sherbrooke in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec from 1867 to 1892 as a Conservative. He was born in Stuartfield, Aberdeenshire, the son of the Reverend James Robertson and Elizabeth Murray, and came to Sherbrooke, Lower Canada with his family in 1836. Robertson established a store in Sherbrooke and speculated in land. He owned the Sherbrooke Grist Mill and was a director of the Sherbrooke and Magog Turnpike Road Company. Robertson helped promote the Sherbrooke, Eastern Townships and Kennebec Railway (later part of the Quebec Central Railway) and served as its president. He served as secretary-treasurer for Sherbrooke and was mayor from 1854 to 1855, from 1857 to 1867 and from 1869 to 1872. In 1870, he married Mary Jane Woodward. Richard William Heneker
Richard William Heneker (May 2, 1823 in Ireland – August 15, 1912) is a Canadian businessman of Irish descent. Following his immigration to Canada in 1855, he settled in Sherbrooke, in Quebec. After a long career in business in Sherbrooke, he left Canada in 1902 to return to retirement in England. For about fifty years, Heneker was a businessman and an influential leader in the Eastern Townships at the end of 19th century. Throughout his life in Canada, he pursued two missions, namely to enable Anglophones in the Sherbrooke region to emancipate themselves and build a regional economy controlled by residents of the Eastern Townships. He acted as the first chairman of Bishop's College School and a Chancellor of Bishop's University. William Bullock Ives, PC, QC (November 17, 1841 – July 15, 1899) was a Canadian politician, who served in the House of Commons of Canada from 1878 to 1899. A member of the Conservative Party of Canada, he represented the electoral districts of Richmond—Wolfe from 1878 to 1891 and Sherbrooke from 1891 to 1899, and served as the President of the Privy Council and Minister of Trade and Commerce. Louis-Edmond Panneton
Louis-Edmond Panneton (July 6, 1848 – August 5, 1935) was a lawyer, judge, educator and political figure in Quebec. He represented Sherbrooke in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec from 1892 to 1900 as a Conservative. He was born in Trois-Rivières, Canada East, the son of André Panneton and Marie Blondin, and was educated at the Séminaire de Trois-Rivières. Panneton was admitted to the Quebec bar in 1870 and set up practice in Sherbrooke. In 1886, he married Corinne, the daughter of Louis-Tréfflé Dorais. He was mayor of Sherbrooke in 1888. In 1899, Panneton was named Queen's Counsel. He was defeated in 1900 when he ran for reelection to the Quebec assembly and returned to his law practice. Panneton also taught law at Bishop's College. In 1912, he was named to the Quebec Superior Court for Montreal district. Arthur Norreys Worthington
Arthur Norreys Worthington (February 17, 1862 – February 7, 1912) was a Canadian physician, surgeon, soldier, and politician. Biography Born in Sherbrooke, Canada East, the son of Edward Dagge Worthington (1820–1895), Worthington was educated at the Sherbrooke Academy, Bishop's College and McGill University. A physician and surgeon, he was surgeon to the 53rd Regiment and to the Sherbrooke Protestant Hospital. He served in the North-West Rebellion in 1885, where he was awarded a medal and clasp and was mentioned in dispatches. He took part in the South Africa Campaign in 1900–1901 and was awarded a medal and three clasps and was named in dispatches. Charles Benjamin Howard (27 September 1885 – 25 March 1964) was a Liberal party member of the House of Commons of Canada. He was born in Smith's Mills, Quebec in Stanstead County and became a businessman, industrialist and lumber merchant. Howard attended high school at Sherbrooke then Stanstead Wesleyan College. In 1923, he assumed the presidency of his family's lumber operation, B.C. Howard Company, following his father's death. In 1950 and 1951, Howard was mayor of Sherbrooke. Jean Perrault (born May 28, 1945), is a Canadian politician, who served as mayor of Sherbrooke, Quebec from 1994 to 2009, and as president of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. In his capacity as president of the FCM, he was one of the most outspoken Canadian opponents of the "Buy American" provisions in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
