In many countries, a mayor is the highest-ranking official in a municipal government such as that of a city or a town. Worldwide, there is a wide variance in local laws and customs regarding the powers and responsibilities of a mayor as well as the means by which a mayor is elected or otherwise mandated. Johanna Maria "Annemarie" Penn-te Strake (born 31 July 1953) is a Dutch jurist and politician. She has been mayor of Maastricht since 1 July 2015. Education and career Penn-te Strake grew up in Deurne and studied law at the Radboud University Nijmegen. She worked as a judge and as a public prosecutor in the Court of Maastricht. Onno Hoes (born 5 June 1961) is a Dutch politician of the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) and businessman. He was the acting Mayor of Haarlemmermeer from 28 November 2017 till 10 July 2019 He was Mayor of Maastricht from 1 November 2010 till 30 June 2015. From 11 March 2010 till 12 October 2014 he was also Chairman of the Dutch Center Information and Documentation Israel. Before becoming mayor of Maastricht Hoes has held several political positions. Gerardus Bernardus Maria "Gerd" Leers (born 12 July 1951) is a Dutch politician of the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) party. He is the acting Mayor of Brunssum since 1 January 2018. Biography Politics On 4 September 1990 Leers became a Member of the House of Representatives. He was a member of the permanent parliamentary commission for transport and water management. The political peak in his House of Representatives period was the Betuwe route, of which Leers was a strong proponent. However, he was also involved in a construction fraud scandal.
