Data East
, also abbreviated as DECO, was a Japanese video game, pinball and electronic engineering company. The company was in operation from 1976 to 2003, and released 150 video game titles. Its main headquarters were located in Suginami, Tokyo. The American subsidiary, Data East USA, was headquartered in San Jose, California. History Data East was founded on April 20, 1976, by Tokai University alumnus Tetsuo Fukuda. Data East developed and released in July 1977 its first arcade game ''Jack Lot'', a medal game based on Blackjack for business use. This was followed in January 1978 by ''Super Break'' which was its first actual video game. More than 15 arcade games were released by Data East in the 1970s. Data East established its U.S. division in June 1979, after its chief competitors Sega and Taito had already established a market presence. ''Karate Champ'', known in Japan as , is a 1984 arcade fighting game developed by Technōs Japan (which would later developing 1995 Neo Geo titles ''Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer'' with SNK) and released by Data East. A variety of moves can be performed using the dual-joystick controls using a best-of-three matches format like later fighting games. The game was a commercial blockbuster, especially in the United States where it was the arcade game of 1985 and the best-selling home computer game up until 1989. ''Karate Champ'' established and popularized the one-on-one fighting game genre, for which it is considered one of the most influential games of all time. Karnov
is a platform game released in arcades in 1987. A Nintendo Entertainment System port followed. Players take control of the title character Jinborov Karnovski, or "Karnov" for short. Karnov is a strongman popularly illustrated as being from an unspecified part of the Soviet Union's Central Asian republics as shown on the arcade flyer and again in '' Karnov's Revenge''. As a character created by Data East, Karnov was reintroduced in several other games from the company, including ''Bad Dudes Vs. DragonNinja'' in which he is a boss in the first level. Karnov later appeared in the 1994 Neo-Geo game ''Karnov's Revenge''. Heavy Barrel
is a 1987 overhead Shoot 'em up#Run and gun, run and gun arcade game by Data East. Players begin armed with a gun with unlimited ammunition and a limited supply of grenades. Improved weapons and grenade powerups are made available within the game, either in plain sight or within crates that must be unlocked using keys. Additionally, crates may contain orbs or one of the six pieces of the Heavy Barrel superweapon. Captain Silver
is a side-scrolling hack and slash platform game released for the arcades by Data East in 1987. Home versions were released for the Master System by Sega and for the Nintendo Entertainment System, NES by Tokuma Shoten. Plot A young sailor and former first mate named Jim Aykroyd (Jack Avery in US) who goes on a journey to seek the lost treasure of Captain Silver, facing various perils along the way. Gameplay The controls consists of an eight-way joystick for walking, crouching and climbing ladders and two action buttons for attacking and jumping. The player is armed primarily with a sword slashing horizontally while standing and crouching and vertically while climbing a ladder. The player can also move while crouching. Picking up flying fairies grants the player magic power, shooting projectiles with the sword. Side Pocket
is a pocket billiards simulation released as an arcade video game by Data East in 1986. It was ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System and Game Boy, while an enhanced remake was later released on the Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, and Game Gear. The game spawned two sequels, as well as arcade spin-off series titled ''Pocket Gal''. G-Mode owns the intellectual property rights to the ''Side Pocket'' series, and licenses these games globally. Lock-On (video Game)
''Lock-On'' is a 1986 first-person combat flight simulator video game with a futuristic theme. It was developed by Tatsumi and licensed to Data East for US distribution. Its graphics feature 2.5D, scaling sprites and a full-screen rotation effect. The game consists of 20 levels. Gameplay is similar to ''After Burner'': the plane follows a predefined path, but the player can steer it slightly to evade incoming missiles. The player can fire guns and homing missiles, the latter of which requires the eponymous lock-on first. Darwin 4078
is an arcade game released by Data East in 1986. The game is a vertical scrolling shoot 'em up like ''Xevious'', but as the title indicates, Charles Darwin's theory of evolution is incorporated into the gameplay. Setting and design The game takes place within a gigantic spaceship which has virtually infinite capacity because of its ability to manipulate time and space. The player must deal with enigmatic creatures called EVOL, which consist only of pure energy and need to keep themselves in capsules in order to maintain their existence in the world. All of the characters in the game are designed to resemble microscopic organisms, both in their appearance and their quick, tricky movements. Gameplay

Player controls with two buttons and an 8-way joystick. One button shoots the gun, the other allows the player to jump enemy bullets and other attacks. The 8-way joystick is used to specify the direction of movement, pointing down to crouch and the different up directions to indicate angle of the shot. At the start of the game, the player is given an option to practice in the target practice room, which is similar to a standard



Road Blaster
is an interactive movie video game developed by Data East featuring animation by Toei Animation, originally released exclusively in Japan as a laserdisc-based arcade game in 1985. The player assumes the role of a vigilante who must avenge the death of his wife by pursuing the biker gang responsible for her death in a modified sports car. The game would later be ported to a variety of home formats such as the MSX and Sharp X1 ( VHD format), Sega CD (under the title of ''Road Blaster FX''), LaserActive (in Mega-LD format), PlayStation and Sega Saturn (in a compilation with ''Thunder Storm'').
