Arthur Grant Duff
Sir Arthur Cuninghame Grant Duff, (23 May 1861 – 11 April 1948) was a British diplomat who was Minister to several countries. Career Arthur Cuninghame Grant Duff was the eldest son of M.E. Grant Duff (later Sir Mountstuart Grant Duff). He was educated at Clifton College and Balliol College, Oxford. He entered HM Diplomatic Service in 1865 and was posted as attaché to the embassy in Madrid. After serving in Vienna, Stockholm and Peking he was recalled to London in 1897 and spent three years working at the Foreign Office. He then began a succession of short appointments in Caracas, as Second Secretary at Berne, Secretary of Legation in Mexico from September 1902, Caracas again, Mexico again, Stockholm again, and Brussels. In some of those postings he was Chargé d'affaires in the absence of the minister or ambassador. Sir Mansfeldt de Cardonnel Findlay (7 April 1861 – 31 December 1932) was a British diplomat who had the difficult task of envoy to Norway during World War I. Career Findlay was educated at Harrow School and joined the Diplomatic Service as an Attaché in 1885. He served at Stockholm, Constantinople, Vienna, Buenos Aires and Belgrade. He was Minister Resident at Dresden and Coburg 1907–09, and Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary at Sofia 1909–11 and at Christiania 1911–23, including the important period of World War I. :Christiania, which up till 1914 was an extremely pleasant post for a Minister who happened to be fond of fishing, became, on the outbreak of the War, one of intense and arduous difficulty. Sir Alexander Condie Stephen
Sir Alexander Condie Stephen (20 July 1850 – 10 May 1908) was a British diplomat and translator from Russian and Persian. He was the first translator of Lermontov's long poem "The Demon" into English, in 1875. He translated "Fairy Tales of a Parrot" from Persian in 1880. In 1884-5, he was Assistant Commissioner on the Afghan Boundary Commission. he had the crucial role of keeping communications open between the Commission, in north-west Afghanistan and threatened by a large Russian army, and the British government in London. When the Commission's presence almost triggered a war in the aftermath of the Panjdeh incident, he was sent to London to report to the government in person. He was knighted KCVO on 24 August 1900, for being HM minister resident in Dresden and Coburg. He was Groom in Waiting to King Edward VII from 1901. Sir Charles Augustus Murray PC KCB (22 November 1806 – 3 June 1895) was a British author and diplomat. Early life Murray was the second of three sons born to George Murray, 5th Earl of Dunmore, and the former Lady Susan Hamilton. His elder brother was Alexander Murray, 6th Earl of Dunmore who married Lady Catherine Herbert (daughter of the 11th Earl of Pembroke). His younger brother was the Hon. Sir Augustus Berkeley Paget GCB (16 April 1823 – 11 July 1896) was a British diplomat. In 1876, Paget was appointed a member of Queen Victoria's privy council. Biography Augustus Berkeley Paget was born on 16 April 1823, the son of the diplomat, the Rt. Hon. Sir Arthur Paget and Lady Augusta Fane. He was the nephew of General Sir Edward Paget and grandson of Henry Bayly Paget, 1st Earl of Uxbridge. He was educated at Charterhouse, and in 1840 he entered the service of the crown as clerk in the secretary's department of the general Post Office. He was soon transferred to the Audit Office, and again on 21 August 1841 to the more competitive Foreign Office.
