About half of its 200,000 citizens live abroad (chiefly in New Zealand, Australia and the United States, and also as merchant seamen), and the portion of its national income derived through expatriate remittances is one of the highest in the world. Tonga and the United Kingdom established diplomatic relations in June 1970 after the Treaty of Friendship and Tonga's protection status ended. Tonga, by a modification of its treaty of friendship with the United Kingdom in July 1970, is responsible for its own external affairs. It maintains cordial relations with most countries and has close relations with its Pacific neighbours and the United Kingdom.
