Death metal is an extreme subgenre of heavy metal music. It typically employs heavily distorted and low-tuned guitars, played with techniques such as palm muting and tremolo picking; deep growling vocals; aggressive, powerful drumming, featuring double kick and blast beat techniques; minor keys or atonality; abrupt tempo, key, and time signature changes; and chromatic chord progressions. Malefice
Malefice was an English heavy metal band from Reading, Berkshire, formed in 2003. They disbanded in 2017. History The original members consisted of college friends Dale Butler, Alex Vuskans, Craig Thomas and Craig Fenner. After formation they began writing their songs straight away. Their first major break was to open a four band bill charity gig at the Rivermead Centre in Reading. Henceforth their fanbase began to grow. Through constant touring around Reading and London, they managed to get a distribution deal for their first EP ''Relentless'' through Hangman's Joke. Then in early 2007 they signed to Anticulture Records. They then recorded their debut album ''Entities'' under the production team of Dan Weller and Justin Hill of WellerHill at Craig's parents home in South Wales. Meshuggah
Meshuggah () is a Swedish extreme metal band formed in Umeå in 1985. Originally, the band's name was Metallien. The band's current lineup consists of lead vocalist Jens Kidman, guitarists Fredrik Thordendal and Mårten Hagström, drummer Tomas Haake and bassist Dick Lövgren. Since its formation, the band has released nine studio albums, six EPs and eight music videos. Their latest studio album, '' Immutable'', was released in April 2022 via Atomic Fire Records. Merlin is a death metal band from Russia, formed in 1992 in part by bassist and female growling vocalist Mary Abaza. History Merlin was formed in 1992 by influential female vocalist and bassist ''Mary Abaza'' and renowned Russian guitarist ''Alex Ioffe''. After a long search, they met drummer ''Nick Byckoff''. Before Merlin, all three played in various styles from hard rock to thrash. The trio wanted a name that was original for a death metal band and easy to rememberer for fans, settling on "Merlin" as a symbol of magical power and majesty. Mercenary (band)
Mercenary are a Danish melodic death metal band that was formed in 1991. The band incorporates a lot of power and progressive elements in their songwriting. History Mercenary formed in Aalborg, Denmark in 1991 as the brainchild of Henrik "Kral" Andersen. The band name was taken from a lyric in the Slayer song, "Ghosts of War". After the release of two demos, ''Domicile'' (1993) and ''Gummizild'' (1994), they were able to sign with Black Day Records, and released a four-song EP, ''Supremacy'' (1996). In 1997, they were signed to the Danish label Serious Entertainment, and in 1998 they released their full-length debut, ''First Breath''. Mendeed
Mendeed was a Scottish heavy metal band formed in Dumbarton, in 2000 and disbanded in 2007. History The band's members met at school in Dumbarton. In 2002 they self-released their first EP ''Killing Something Beautiful''. In 2003 the band released their second EP ''As We Rise''. In December 2003 Mendeed signed a recording contract with UK Label Rising Records. The band's first release on that label was an EP ''From Shadows Came Darkness'' in September 2004. It was produced by Mark Daghorn. Mendeed's music was played on rock radio stations. The band toured, supporting DragonForce twice. Master (American Band)
Master is an American death metal band led by Paul Speckmann. Originally formed in Chicago, the band later relocated to Uherské Hradiště, Czechia. History The group was originally formed by Speckmann in 1983 as Death Strike, after the demise of his earlier band, Warcry. In 1985, Speckmann renamed the band Master and obtained a record deal with Combat Records. An album was recorded but was shelved due to issues with the label. The recording sessions for the album were released in 2003 by Displeased Records as ''Unreleased 1985 Album''. In 1990, the band signed with the German label Nuclear Blast, which also had Speckmann's other group, Abomination, under contract. Master released their debut album, titled ''Master'', in 1990. It was recorded with Chris Mittelbrun on guitars and Bill Schmidt on drums. Massacre (briefly known as Massacre X and Gods of Death) is an American death metal band. They were formed in 1984 by Allen West, Bill Andrews, and Mike Borders, soon after vocalist Kam Lee joined. The band has reunited several times with varying line-ups, most recently in late 2016. Massacra
Massacra was one of France's leading death/ thrash metal bands in the early nineties. After recording three demos in the 1980s, they finally landed a deal with Shark Records from Germany, and released their famous debut, ''Final Holocaust'' in 1990. Unfortunately, they found themselves at odds with the label's trend-following attitude and after two successful albums, ''Enjoy the Violence'' and ''Signs of the Decline'', they terminated their contract in 1993. They signed a new deal with the major label Phonogram. The band decided not to rehash the same songs over and over on later releases—by the time of their fourth album (1994's Sick) the band had transformed to groove-laden mid-paced thrash metal. The band broke up after guitarist Fred Duval died of skin cancer on 6 June 1997 at the age of 29. Martyr (band)
Martyr was a Canadian death metal band from Trois-Rivières, Québec. Their musical style consisted of mostly progressive use of melodics and variations of thrash and death metal influences. History Formed in 1994 by brothers Daniel (guitar, vocals) and François Mongrain (bass), along with Pier-Luc Lampron (guitar) and François Richard (drums), Martyr recorded a demo tape in September 1995 titled ''Ostrogoth''. In September 1997, the drummer François Richard left the band being replaced by Patrice Hamelin, the full-length debut ''Hopeless Hopes'' was self-released in November that same year. Martyr independently released their second album, ''Warp Zone'', in 2000. Lampron had left the band and was replaced on the guitar by Martin Carbonneau. Marionette (band)
Marionette was a Swedish melodic death metal band. They hail from Gothenburg, Sweden, formed in 2005. The band achieved recognition from placing high, and often winning, many national and international music contests.
