List Of Nunavut General Elections
The Canadian territory of Nunavut holds general elections to its unicameral legislative body, the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut. Nunavut was created 1 April 1999 from part of the Northwest Territories, and its first election was held prior to division on 15 February 1999. Since the adoption of a fixed election date law in 2014, general elections in Nunavut are held on the last Monday of October in the fourth calendar year following the last elections. Nunavut is divided into nineteen constituencies, each electing one ''Member of the Legislative Assembly'' (MLA). The number of constituencies has remained unchanged since the first general election. Nunavut uses consensus government in which there are no political parties. Louis Tapardjuk (born January 30, 1953 in an igloo northwest of Igloolik, Nunavut, Canada) was the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the electoral district of Amittuq from 2004 to 2013, having won the seat in the 2004 Nunavut election. Enoki Irqittuq is a former territorial level politician from Hall Beach, Nunavut, Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut from 1999 until 2004. Irqittuq was elected in the 1999 Nunavut general election. Ovide Alakannuark
Ovide Alakannuark (December 25, 1938 – October 7, 2019) was a Canadian territorial level politician from Pelly Bay, Northwest Territories (now Kugaaruk, Nunavut). He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut from 1999 until 2004. Alakannuark was elected in the 1999 Nunavut general election. He defeated candidate Steve Mapsalak by just 25 votes to win the Akulliq electoral district. 2004 Nunavut General Election
The 2004 Nunavut general election was held on February 16, 2004, to elect the 19 members of the 2nd Legislative Assembly of Nunavut. Premier Paul Okalik asked for the five-year-old territory's first parliament to be dissolved on January 16. The territory operates on a consensus government system with no political parties; the premier is subsequently chosen by and from the MLAs. There were 11,285 registered voters at the time of the election call. Paul Okalik
Paul Okalik ( iu, ᐹᓪ ᐅᑲᓕᖅ, ; born May 26, 1964) is a Canadian politician. He is the first Inuk to have been called to the Nunavut Bar. He was also the first premier of Nunavut. On November 4, 2010, he was elected Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut. Okalik represented the electoral district of Iqaluit West in the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut until April 6, 2011 when he announced he would be resigning in order to run for the Liberal Party of Canada in the riding of Nunavut in the 2011 Canadian federal election. He returned to the Legislative Assembly in 2013 until being defeated in the 2017 general election. John Ningark
John Ningark (17 March 1944 – 17 November 2016) was a territorial level politician in Nunavut Canada. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories and Legislative Assembly of Nunavut. Political history Ningark, who was from Repulse Bay, Northwest Territories (now Naujaat, Nunavut), was elected to the Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly in a by-election in 1989 held in the Natilikmiot electoral district. He was returned by acclamation in the 1991 election. Ningark briefly served as Minister of Renewable Resources in 1992 but resigned shortly after being appointed, reportedly because he found the position too stressful. He won re-election to his third term and final term in the 1995 election, defeating future Nunavut MLA Uriash Puqiqnak by less than 30 votes. Steve Mapsalak (born March 17, 1957) is a Canadian politician, who served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut. He first won the Akulliq seat in the 2004 Nunavut election. According to preliminary results, he was narrowly defeated by John Ningark in the 2008 election.
