Jamaica
Jamaica (; ) is an island country situated in the Caribbean Sea. Spanning in area, it is the third-largest island of the Greater Antilles and the Caribbean (after Cuba and Hispaniola). Jamaica lies about south of Cuba, and west of Hispaniola (the island containing the countries of Haiti and the Dominican Republic); the British Overseas Territory of the Cayman Islands lies some to the north-west. Originally inhabited by the indigenous Taíno peoples, the island came under Spanish rule following the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1494. Many of the indigenous people either were killed or died of diseases, after which the Spanish brought large numbers of African slaves to Jamaica as labourers. Jamaican literature is internationally renowned, with the island of Jamaica being the home or birthplace of many important authors. The Cinema of the Caribbean refers to the film industry in the Caribbean. Compared to earlier times, a significant amount of filmmaking occurred in the Caribbean in the 1980s and onward. Prior to this time, filmmaking in the Caribbean was relatively minor. For example, in the 1970s, only a few films were made in Guadeloupe, Haiti and Jamaica. In the 1970s and prior to this time, the Caribbean generally lacked an infrastructure for filmmaking and film distribution. In contemporary times, the cinema of the Caribbean has been described as an "expanded and ever-expanding field." It has been suggested that it can be challenging to document all of the full-length, feature films that have been produced in the Caribbean, because each country has its own filmmaking industry that is separate from the other countries' industries. ''Smile Orange'' is a 1976 satirical film set in Jamaica. It follows the day-to-day life of Ringo, played by Carl Bradshaw, a smooth-talking waiter and con-man. The film explores the tourism industry in the Caribbean and seems to suggest there are similarities to slavery in that industry. The film was directed by Trevor D. Rhone, who also wrote the play on which it is based, and was produced by Edward Knight. The movie stars Bradshaw, Glenn Morrison, and Stanley Irons. ''Shottas'' is a 2002 Jamaican crime film about two young men who participate in organized crime in Kingston and Miami. It stars Ky-Mani Marley, Spragga Benz, Paul Campbell and Louie Rankin and was written and directed by Cess Silvera. Despite its low budget, the distribution of an unfinished bootleg made it a cult favourite long before its official limited release in the United States by Triumph Films and Destination Films in 2006. Plot The film tells the story of two young men, Biggs (Errol) (Ky-Mani Marley) and Wayne (Spragga Benz), who grow up together in the tough and dangerous streets of (Waterhouse) Kingston. ''Rockers'' is a 1978 Jamaican film by Theodoros Bafaloukos. ''Papillon'' is a 1973 epic historical drama prison film directed by Franklin J. Schaffner. The screenplay by Dalton Trumbo and Lorenzo Semple Jr. was based on the 1969 autobiography by the French convict Henri Charrière.
