Jamaica
Jamaica (; ) is an island country situated in the Caribbean Sea. Spanning in area, it is the third-largest island of the Greater Antilles and the Caribbean (after Cuba and Hispaniola). Jamaica lies about south of Cuba, and west of Hispaniola (the island containing the countries of Haiti and the Dominican Republic); the British Overseas Territory of the Cayman Islands lies some to the north-west. Originally inhabited by the indigenous Taíno peoples, the island came under Spanish rule following the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1494. Many of the indigenous people either were killed or died of diseases, after which the Spanish brought large numbers of African slaves to Jamaica as labourers. The island remained a possession of Spain until 1655, when England (later Great Britain) conquered it, renaming it ''Jamaica''. Under British colonial rule Jamaica became a leading sugar exporter, with a plantation economy dependent on the African slaves and later their des ... Jamaican Literature
Jamaican literature is internationally renowned, with the island of Jamaica being the home or birthplace of many important authors. One of the most distinctive aspects of Jamaican literature is its use of the local dialect — a variation of English, the country's official language. Known to Jamaicans as "patois", and now sometimes described as "nation language", this creole has become an important element in Jamaican fiction, poetry and theater. Notable writers and intellectuals from elsewhere in the Caribbean region studied at the University of the West Indies in Kingston, including St. Lucian Nobel prize-winner, Derek Walcott, the late Guyanese historian and scholar Walter Rodney, and Grenadian poet and short story writer Merle Collins. Folk beginnings The tradition of storytelling in Jamaica is a long one, beginning with folktales told by the slaves during the colonial period. Jamaica's folk stories are most closely associated with those of the Ashanti tribe in West Afr ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Cinema Of The Caribbean
The Cinema of the Caribbean refers to the film industry in the Caribbean. Compared to earlier times, a significant amount of filmmaking occurred in the Caribbean in the 1980s and onward. Prior to this time, filmmaking in the Caribbean was relatively minor. For example, in the 1970s, only a few films were made in Guadeloupe, Haiti and Jamaica. In the 1970s and prior to this time, the Caribbean generally lacked an infrastructure for filmmaking and film distribution. In contemporary times, the cinema of the Caribbean has been described as an "expanded and ever-expanding field." It has been suggested that it can be challenging to document all of the full-length, feature films that have been produced in the Caribbean, because each country has its own filmmaking industry that is separate from the other countries' industries. By country Antigua and Barbuda '' The Sweetest Mango'' is a 2001 film that was the first full-length feature film made in Antigua and Barbuda. Aruba Cuba Cine ...
