List Of House Members Of The 26th Parliament Of Canada
The 26th Canadian Parliament was in session from May 16, 1963, until September 8, 1965. The membership was set by the 1963 federal election on April 8, 1963, and it changed only somewhat due to resignations and by-elections until it was dissolved prior to the 1965 election. Most of the MPs were elected as the single member for their district. Two represented Queen's (PEI) and two represented Halifax. It was controlled by a Liberal Party minority under Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson and the 19th Canadian Ministry. The Official Opposition was the Progressive Conservative Party, led by John Diefenbaker. The Speaker was Alan Macnaughton. Alberta
Alberta ( ) is one of the thirteen provinces and territories of Canada. It is part of Western Canada and is one of the three prairie provinces. Edmonton ( ) is the capital city of the Canadian province of Alberta. Harry Hays
Harry William Hays, (December 25, 1909 – May 4, 1982) was a Canadian politician, 27th Mayor of Calgary, Cabinet minister in the government of Lester Pearson, and Senator from Alberta. Personal life Born in Carstairs, Alberta, Hays had several careers related to agriculture. He was an auctioneer, rancher and breeder as well as a radio broadcaster. He was a founding member and president of the Alberta Poultry Breeders' Association and also served as president of the Alberta Holstein Breeders' Association. He led the Canadian Swine Breeders during World War II when it initiated the "Bacon for Britain" campaign of increased production as part of the war effort. In the 1950s, he pioneered exporting cattle by airplane allowing the Canadian industry to develop new markets in Mexico and the United Kingdom. Douglas Harkness
Douglas Scott Harkness, (March 29, 1903 – May 2, 1999) was a Canadian politician. Early life and military service He was born in Toronto, Ontario, and moved to Calgary, Alberta in 1929. He graduated from the University of Alberta, then farmed and taught school in the vicinity of Red Deer. He taught at Crescent Heights High School until 1939. He fought during the Second World War from 1940 to 1945, serving in the European theater of war. He was posted to Great Britain, Sicily, Italy and Northwest Europe. In 1943 was awarded the George Medal "in recognition of conspicuous gallantry in carrying out hazardous work in a very brave manner". Harkness was aboard a troopship when it was torpedoed transiting from Sicily to England. Harkness was awarded the medal for his organization of the abandonment of the ship. Calgary North was a federal electoral district in Alberta, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1953 to 1997. This riding was created in 1952 from parts of the Bow River, Calgary West and East Calgary ridings. The electoral district was abolished in 1996 when it was merged into Calgary—Nose Hill. Eldon Woolliams
Eldon Mattison Woolliams, (12 April 1916 – 24 September 2001) was a Canadian politician and lawyer. Wooliams served as a Progressive Conservative Party member of the House of Commons of Canada. He was born in Rosetown, Saskatchewan, and his career included law and education. He was shadow Justice Minister and Chairman of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs. As a 'Perry Mason' style trial lawyer, he had over two dozen murder trials where he won the cases as barrister for the accused. He was a descendant of Sir Matthew Hale, Lord Chief Justice of England. Woolliams first represented Alberta's Bow River electoral district. His first attempt to win the riding in the 1957 federal election was unsuccessful, but he would defeat incumbent Charles Edward Johnston in the 1958 election. Bow River (electoral District)
Bow River is a federal electoral district in southern Alberta, Canada, that has been represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1917 to 1968, from 1979 to 1988 and since 2015. This riding was first created in 1914 from Macleod riding. It was abolished in 1966 when it was redistributed into Calgary North, Crowfoot, Palliser and Rocky Mountain ridings. It was re-created in 1976 from parts of Crowfoot, Lethbridge, Palliser and Rocky Mountain ridings. It was abolished in 1987 when it was redistributed into Calgary North, Calgary Northeast, Calgary West, Crowfoot, Lethbridge, Macleod, Red Deer and Wild Rose ridings. Clifford Smallwood
Clifford Silas Smallwood (July 28, 1915 – November 14, 1979) was a farmer and served as a Canadian federal politician from 1958 to 1968. Federal politics Smallwood first ran as a candidate for the House of Commons of Canada in the 1957 federal election. He was defeated by incumbent Member of Parliament James A. Smith. Parliament was dissolved a year later forcing the 1958 federal election. Smallwood and Smith ran against each other again and Smallwood defeated Smith in a landslide. Smallwood ran for a second term in the 1962 federal election; he ran against Smith for the third time and defeated him once again in another landslide victory. The minority government fell on a confidence motion a year later forcing the dissolution of parliament and the 1963 federal election.
