Calgary South
Calgary South was a federal electoral district in Alberta, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1953 to 1988. This riding was created in 1952 from parts of Bow River, Calgary West and Calgary East ridings. It was abolished in 1987 when it was redistributed into Calgary Southwest and Calgary West ridings. An electoral district in Canada is a geographical constituency upon which Canada's representative democracy is based. It is officially known in Canadian French as a ''circonscription'' but frequently called a ''comté'' ( county). In English it is also colloquially and more commonly known as a riding or constituency. Jack Leslie (politician)
John Clifford Leslie (June 15, 1920 – December 27, 2010) was a Canadian politician and businessman and the first native-born Calgarian elected as mayor of the city. Born in Calgary, Jack Leslie received his primary and secondary school education in Calgary and attended the University of Alberta. With the outbreak of war, he left his studies in Edmonton and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. He saw four years service as a pilot. Following the war, he obtained his A.A.C.I. degree from the Appraisal Institute of Canada and began to pursue a career in real estate. This is a list of past arrangements of Canada's electoral districts. Each district sends one member to the House of Commons of Canada. In 1999 and 2003, the Legislative Assembly of Ontario was elected using the same districts within that province. 96 of Ontario's 107 provincial electoral districts, roughly those outside Northern Ontario, remain coterminous with their federal counterparts. This is a list of Canada's 338 federal electoral districts (commonly referred to as '' ridings'' in Canadian English) as defined by the ''2013 Representation Order''. Canadian federal electoral districts are constituencies that elect members of Parliament to Canada's House of Commons every election. Provincial electoral districts often have names similar to their local federal counterpart, but usually have different geographic boundaries. The district was one of 63 districts in 1963, and 65 in 1967, mandated to return a single member to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta using the first past the post method of voting. Barbara Jane Sparrow (born July 11, 1935) is a retired Canadian politician. Political career Sparrow, a Registered Nurse and businessperson, was first elected to the House of Commons of Canada in the 1984 federal election as Member of Parliament for Calgary South, Alberta. That election brought the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada to power under the leadership of Brian Mulroney. John William Thomson (born 28 December 1928) was a Progressive Conservative party member of the House of Commons of Canada. He was a businessman by career. Peter Colwell Bawden, (January 1, 1929 – February 28, 1991) was a prominent Canadians, Canadian oilman and federal politician. Pat Mahoney
Patrick Morgan (Pat) Mahoney, (January 20, 1929 – June 8, 2012) was a Canadian judge, politician, lawyer and businessman. Mahoney was first elected to parliament in the 1968 election as the Liberal Member of Parliament for Calgary South. A Liberal in a province and city not known for electing Liberal politicians, Mahoney rode the wave of Trudeaumania to defeat Progressive Conservative incumbent Harold Raymond Ballard by 756 votes. In 1970, he became parliamentary secretary to the Minister of Finance. He held that position until January 1972, when Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau promoted him to Cabinet as a minister of state. Harold Raymond Ballard
Harold Raymond Ballard (February 5, 1918 – January 31, 1997) was a business executive, chartered accountant and Canadian politician. He served as a Member of Parliament from 1965 to 1968 and alderman on Calgary City Council from 1962 to 1966. Ballard was born at Provost, Alberta to William Ballard and Mable Armstrong on February 5, 1918. In the late 1930s, he served as Town Clerk in Lloydminster. Harry Hays
Harry William Hays, (December 25, 1909 – May 4, 1982) was a Canadian politician, 27th Mayor of Calgary, Cabinet minister in the government of Lester Pearson, and Senator from Alberta. Personal life Born in Carstairs, Alberta, Hays had several careers related to agriculture. He was an auctioneer, rancher and breeder as well as a radio broadcaster. He was a founding member and president of the Alberta Poultry Breeders' Association and also served as president of the Alberta Holstein Breeders' Association.
