Horse racing is an equestrian performance sport, typically involving two or more horses ridden by jockeys (or sometimes driven without riders) over a set distance for competition. Hukum
Hukum (foaled 2 April 2017) is a British Thoroughbred racehorse. He won the second of his two starts as a juvenile in 2019 and improved to become a high-class middle-distance performer in the following year when he took the King George V Stakes and Geoffrey Freer Stakes. In 2021 he repeated his win in the Geoffrey Freer Stakes as well as taking the Tapster Stakes, John Smith's Silver Cup Stakes and Cumberland Lodge Stakes. Hukum went on to further success as a five-year-old when he won the Dubai City of Gold and the Coronation Cup before his season was ended by injury. He returned as a six-year-old to win the Brigadier Gerard Stakes. Background Hukum is a bay horse with no white markings bred in England by Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum's Shadwell Estate. Commonwealth Cup (horse Race)
The Commonwealth Cup is a Group 1 flat horse race in Great Britain open to colts and fillies aged three years. It is run at Ascot over a distance of 6 furlongs (1,207 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in June. The Commonwealth Cup was introduced in 2015 as part of changes to the programme of sprint horse races in Europe. The Diamond Jubilee Stakes, run over the same course and distance at the same meeting, was closed to three-year-olds at the same time. The new race was subsequently named the Commonwealth Cup and the Buckingham Palace Stakes was removed from the Royal Ascot meeting to make room for the new race. The race was initially open to all three year-old-horses, including geldings, to help the race become established. Kyprios (horse)
Kyprios (foaled 18 May 2018) is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse. He was lightly raced in his early career, winning one race from two starts in each of his first two seasons. As a four-year-old in 2022 he emerged as a top-class stayer, winning the Vintage Crop Stakes and Saval Beg Stakes in Ireland before taking the Ascot Gold Cup, Goodwood Cup, Irish St. Leger and Prix du Cadran. Background Kyprios is a chestnut colt with a broad white blaze and two white socks bred by the Moyglare Stud. He races in the ownership of Moyglare Stud in partnership with Coolmore Stud's Michael Tabor and Susan Magnier. In 2022 the horse's ownership team was joined by Georg von Opel. Ascot Gold Cup
The Gold Cup is a Group 1 flat horse race in Great Britain open to horses aged four years or older. It is run at Ascot over a distance of 2 miles 3 furlongs and 210 yards (4,014 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in June. It is Britain's most prestigious event for "stayers" – horses which specialise in racing over long distances. It is traditionally held on the third day of the Royal Ascot meeting, which is known colloquially (but not officially) as Ladies' Day. State Of Rest (foaled 11 April 2018) is a retired Irish-bred and trained Thoroughbred racehorse. He was one of leading three-year-olds of 2021 winning Australia's premier G1 W. S. Cox Plate and Grade I Saratoga Derby Invitational Stakes in the United States. In 2022 he added further Group 1 wins, taking the Prix Ganay in France and the Prince of Wales's Stakes in England. Background State Of Rest is a bay colt, out of the Quiet American unraced mare Repose, was bred in Ireland by Tinnakill Bloodstock. The Prince of Wales's Stakes is a Group 1 flat horse race in Great Britain open to horses aged four years or older. It is run at Ascot over a distance of 1 mile 1 furlong and 212 yards (2,004 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in June. History The event was established in 1862, and it was named after the Prince of Wales at that time, the future King Edward VII. The original version was restricted to three-year-olds, and it was contested over 1 mile and 5 furlongs. The race was discontinued after World War II, when there was no Prince of Wales. Nature Strip (horse)
Nature Strip (foaled 16 November 2014) is an Australian Thoroughbred racehorse who was the 2020 and 2022 Australian Champion Racehorse of the Year, a nine-time Group 1 winner, and the winner of The Everest in 2021, the richest turf race in the world. Background Nature Strip was passed in for $90,000 at the 2016 Inglis Premier Yearling sale and sent to trainer Robert Smerdon by breeders Golden Grove Farm. Smerdon sold five 1% shares in the then un-named horse, before convincing retired businessman Rod Lyons to buy 85% and farmer Peter Baulderstone to take the remaining 10%, with the value set at $120,000. King's Stand Stakes
The King's Stand Stakes is a Group 1 flat horse race in Great Britain open to horses aged three years or older. It is run at Ascot over a distance of 5 furlongs (1,006 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in June. History The event was created as a result of bad weather at Royal Ascot in 1860. Heavy rain made it impossible to run the Royal Stand Plate over its usual distance of 2 miles, so it was shortened to 5 furlongs on the only raceable part of the course. Ascot Racecourse ("ascot" pronounced , often pronounced ) is a dual-purpose British racecourse, located in Ascot, Berkshire, England, which is used for thoroughbred horse racing. It hosts 13 of Britain's 36 annual Flat Group 1 horse races and three Grade 1 Jumps races. Ascot Racecourse is visited by approximately 600,000 people a year, accounting for 10% of all UK racegoers. Queen Anne Stakes
The Queen Anne Stakes is a Group 1 flat horse race in Great Britain open to horses aged four years or older. It is run at Ascot over a distance of 1 mile (1,609 metres), and is scheduled to take place each year in June. History The event was established in 1840, and during the early part of its history it was called the Trial Stakes. It was originally open to horses aged three or older. In 1930, it was renamed in honour of Queen Anne, the founder of Ascot Racecourse. The Queen Anne Stakes was classed as a Group 3 race in 1971, and it was promoted to Group 2 level in 1984. It was given Group 1 status in 2003, and at this point the minimum age of participating horses was raised to four. It is now the first race on the opening day of the Royal Ascot meeting.
