Tennis
Tennis is a racket sport that is played either individually against a single opponent ( singles) or between two teams of two players each ( doubles). Each player uses a tennis racket that is strung with cord to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over or around a net and into the opponent's court. The object of the game is to manoeuvre the ball in such a way that the opponent is not able to play a valid return. The player who is unable to return the ball validly will not gain a point, while the opposite player will. Tennis is an Olympic sport and is played at all levels of society and at all ages. The sport can be played by anyone who can hold a racket, including wheelchair users. The modern game of tennis originated in Birmingham, England, in the late 19th century as lawn tennis. Thomas Buchmayer
Thomas Buchmayer (born 14 February 1971) is a former professional tennis player from Austria. Biography Buchmayer, a left-handed player from Sankt Pölten, was coached by Jan Kukal. Turning professional in 1989, he made the round of 16 as a wildcard at Kitzbühel that year, withs wins over Tomás Carbonell and world number 12 Alberto Mancini. In 1991 he made his debut for the Austria Davis Cup team and featured in two World Group ties. He played a reverse singles match in the first, against Czechoslovakia in Prague, which he won over Karel Nováček, but the Austrians had already lost the tie. His other tie was a qualifier in Manchester against Great Britain. He lost the opening singles match to Jeremy Bates in four sets, then later played in the last of the reserve singles, by which time the British team had taken Austria's place in the World Group. Markus Hipfl
Markus Hipfl (born 26 April 1978) is a former professional tennis player from Austria. Career Hipfl had a noteworthy junior career. He won the Under-16s Orange Bowl in 1994 and was also a finalist in that year's European Championship. In 1996 he finished runner-up in the 1996 US Open Boys' Singles, losing in the final to German Daniel Elsner. During the 1999 ATP Tour, Hipfl broke into the top 100 for the first time. He made the semi-finals of Morocco's Grand Prix Hassan II and was a quarter-finalist at four tournaments, in San Marino, Sankt Pölten, Sicily and Majorca. His best performances in 2000 included being a semi-finalist at the Swedish Open and making another quarter-final appearance in the International Raiffeisen Grand Prix at Sankt Pölten. Andreas Haider-Maurer (; born 22 March 1987) is a retired professional tennis player from Austria. In the first round of the 2010 US Open, he forced world No. 5 Robin Söderling to a fifth set before losing the match. That same year, Haider-Maurer reached the final of his home tournament in Vienna. Konstantin Gruber-Zamarripa (born 27 October 1979) is an Austrian former professional tennis player. Gruber, a native of Vienna, turned professional in 1999 and reached a career high singles ranking of 397 during his career. He made a Davis Cup appearance in 2003, when he beat Norway's Stian Boretti in Oslo to give Austria a 5–0 sweep of the tie.
