John Ford
John Martin Feeney (February 1, 1894 – August 31, 1973), known professionally as John Ford, was an American film director and naval officer. He is widely regarded as one of the most important and influential filmmakers of his generation. He was the recipient of six Academy Awards including a record four wins for Best Director. Ford made frequent use of location shooting and wide shots, in which his characters were framed against a vast, harsh, and rugged natural terrain. In a career of more than 50 years, Ford directed more than 140 films (although most of his silent films are now lost). ''Action'' is a 1921 American silent Western film directed by John Ford and featuring Hoot Gibson. It was based on Peter B. Kyne's popular novel '' The Three Godfathers''. The film is considered to be lost. According to contemporaneous newspaper reports, ''Action'' was based on J. Allan Dunn's novel, ''The Mascotte of the Three Star''; ''Mascotte'' appeared as the lead novel in the pulp magazine ''Short Stories'', February 1921.See, for example, the ''San Francisco Chronicle'', September 4, 1921. Associated Exhibitors
Associated Exhibitors was an American film distribution company active during the silent era. The company did not produce its own pictures but released productions by independent producers, handling a mixture of low-budget and more prestigious films during the 1920s. Established in 1920, it had a close association with Pathe Exchange, another medium-sized American company. During the early 1920s Associated Exhibitors was headed by president Arthur S. Kane, before leaving for Universal Pictures in 1925.Ward p.86 During these years the number of films increased, while the quality declined. Having resisted the practice of block booking for many years, Associated Exhibitors adopted it in 1925. After being taken over by a business group, the company announced its plans to acquire a studio and begin film production under the oversight of Pat Powers, however this did not occur. Rosemary Theby
Rosemary Theresa Theby (born Rose Masing, April 8, 1892 – November 10, 1973) was an American film actress. She appeared in some 250 films between 1911 and 1940. Early life and career The daughter of George and Katherine Masing, Theby was born in St. Louis, Missouri. She studied at the Convent of St. Alphonsus in St. Louis and at Sargent's School in New York City. A contemporary newspaper account described her as being of "medium-height, well proportioned, with regular features and dark hair". Theby began working with Vitagraph studios in 1910. Her first film experience came in that company's production of ''The Wager''. By 1915, she was a star for the Universal film company. During World War I Theby took care of a refugee from Lithuania. After being educated and cared for by Theby, the young woman became her maid during an acute shortage of maids in Hollywood, in 1920. ''Across the Divide'' is a 1921 American silent Western film directed by John Holloway and starring Rex Ballard, Rosemary Theby and Ralph McCullough. Plot Left by his dying mother in the care of Buck (Rex Ballard), Wallace Layson (Ralph McCullough) has no knowledge of his real identity. Wallace is to inherit a ranch on his 21st birthday. His father returns and induces Rosa (Rosemary Theby), a dancehall girl, to marry Wallace in a plot to cheat him out of his inheritance. But Wallace is in love with Helen (Dorothy Manners). Buck tells Wallace that the real heir has died and persuades him to pose as the heir, which foils the plans of his father and secures a home for Wallace and Helen. Raymond Hatton
Raymond William Hatton (July 7, 1887 – October 21, 1971) was an American film actor who appeared in almost 500 motion pictures. Biography Hatton was born in Red Oak, Iowa. His physician father steered him toward a career in medicine. However, Hatton had become enamored of being on stage after he acted in a school play, and he left home to go into acting as a career. Hatton was part of a vaudeville act that went to Hollywood in 1911. There, he established a successful silent film career, including a stint being paired in 1920s comedies with Wallace Beery. Hardee Kirkland (May 23, 1868 – February 18, 1929) was an American film actor and film director, director of the silent film, silent era who appeared on stage. Kirkland was born in Savannah, Georgia, Savannah, Georgia (U.S. state), Georgia, the son of former Confederate Brigadier General William Whedbee Kirkland and the older brother of the actress Elizabeth Kirkland, who performed as Odette Tyler. John Bowers (born John E. Bowersox; December 25, 1885 – November 17, 1936) was an American stage and silent film actor who starred in 94 films including several short subjects. He has been identified as being an inspiration for the character Norman Maine in '' A Star Is Born'' (1937). Early life and career Born John E. Bowersox in Garrett, Indiana, to George and Ida Bowersox, John Bowers attended Huntington Business College in Huntington, Indiana, where he became interested in acting. He joined a stock stage group and traveled until he landed in New York in 1912, where he appeared in Broadway productions. Bowers began his film career in 1914. Leatrice Joy (born Leatrice Johanna Zeidler; November 7, 1893 – May 13, 1985) was an American actress most prolific during the silent film era. Early life Joy was born in New Orleans, Louisiana to dentist Edward Joseph Zeidler, who was of Austrian and French descent, and Mary Joy Crimens, who was of German and Irish descent. She had a brother, Billy, who later worked at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. She attended the Convent of the Sacred Heart in New Orleans, where she had planned on becoming a nun, but left when her father was diagnosed with tuberculosis and was forced to give up his dental practice. She tried out for the New Orleans-based Nola Film Company in 1915 and was hired as an actress. Her mother disapproved of her becoming an actress, but the family needed the money, so her mother accompanied her to California, where she began working in plays and films.
