Albania
Albania ( ; sq, Shqipëri or ), or , also or . officially the Republic of Albania ( sq, Republika e Shqipërisë), is a country in Southeastern Europe. It is located on the Adriatic and Ionian Seas within the Mediterranean Sea and shares land borders with Montenegro to the northwest, Kosovo to the northeast, North Macedonia to the east and Greece to the south. Tirana is its capital and largest city, followed by Durrës, Vlorë, and Shkodër. Albania displays varied climatic, geological, hydrological, and morphological conditions, defined in an area of . Pjetër Bogdani
Pjetër Bogdani (1627 – 6 December 1689), known in Italian as ''Pietro Bogdano'', was the most original writer of early literature in Albania. He was author of the Cuneus Prophetarum (''The Band of the Prophets''), 1685, the first prose work of substance written originally in (Gheg) Albanian (i.e. not a translation). He organized a resistance against the Ottomans and a pro-Austrian movement in Kosovo in 1689 that included Muslim and Christian Albanians. Life and work He was born in the village of Gur in the area of Has, near Prizren in 1627. Its exact location is unknown, but Robert Elsie has proposed two modern day villages of Gjonaj and Breg Drini in Prizren area. Bogdani was educated in the traditions of the Catholic church. His uncle Andrea Bogdani (c. 1600–1683) was Archbishop of Skopje and author of a Latin-Albanian grammar, now lost. Nelson Çabej
Nelson R. Çabej (born November 17, 1939, in Gjirokastër, Albania) is a biologist and author. Education He obtained his B.A. in veterinary science in 1961, followed by B.A. in chemistry in 1976, and finally completed his doctorate degree (PhD) in biology in 1986. Career He worked as a veterinarian (1961–66 and 1975–1980), as immunologist (1970–1975), book editor (1980–1990) and biology lecturer (1985–1995). He lives in New Jersey with his family. His multifaceted scientific research includes widely different research areas, extending from applied biology ( epizootology), experimental molecular biology and immunology, genetics, evolution theory, development and epigenetics to the history, history of science, linguistics, philosophy, journalism, and translation. Constantine Of Berat
Constantine of Berat, known among Albanians as Kostandin Jermonak Berati or shortly Kostë Berati, was an Albanian writer and translator of the 18th century. Life and work Not much is known about him, except that he was from Berat, today's southern part of central Albania, then Sanjak of Berat in Vilayet of Janina of the Ottoman Empire. His lifespan was highly probably between 1745 and 1825. Also, Constantine was quite likely an Orthodox monk. Elsie mentions that some experts doubt his existence, at least as a writer. He has copied a part of the "lexicon" of Theodore Kavalliotis, and is believed to have signed in 1779 a religious document (in Greek) together with Kavallioti and Teodor Haxhifilipi in Moscopole. Constantine of Berat is attributed as the author of a manuscript from 1764 to 1822, originally a 154 or 152-page work. It is preserved in the National Library in Tirana. Selfixhe Ciu
Selfixhe Ciu (married name Selfixhe Broja, pen name Kolombja; 1918, Gjirokastër – 2003, Tirana) was an Albanian writer and the first Albanian woman writer to ever publish literature in Albania. On 28 November 1935, when she was 17, Selfixhe Ciu published under the plume name ''Kolombja'', a poem on the ''Populli'' newspaper. She then is part of the Albanian writers of the 1930s period. She was also one of the very first Albanian Feminists. Life Born in Gjirokastër on March 31, 1918, Ciu was friends with Musine Kokalari, one of the first Albanian women to publish literature. She was studying in Florence, Italy, when the Italian invasion of Albania occurred, in 1939. She then returned to Albania with her husband, Xhemal Broja, and opened with him a book store in Shkodër. Nicola Chetta
Nicola Chetta, ( Arbërisht: Nikollë Keta; 12 July 1741 – 15 December 1803) was an Arbëresh writer and priest. He was born in Contessa Entellina Contessa Entellina ( sq, Kuntisa) is a small ''comune'' in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, in Sicily, southern Italy. Is located in the "Valle del Belìce" at above sea level in the mountains called ''Brinjat'', is situated 80 km from ..., Sicily. He was educated at the Greek Orthodox seminary in Palermo. In 1777, Keta himself became rector of the seminary. Martin Camaj
Martin Camaj (21 July 1925 – 12 March 1992) was an Albanian folklorist, linguist, and writer. He is regarded as one of the major authors of modern Albanian prose. His novel ''Rrathë'' is considered to be the first psychological novel written in Albanian. Life Martin Camaj was born in Temal, Shkodër District, Shkodër County, northwestern Albania on 21 July 1925. He first studied in the Jesuit Saverian College of Shkodër and afterwards in the University of Belgrade. Later Camaj worked as professor of Albanian at the Sapienza University of Rome, where he did postgraduate research and finished studies on linguistics in 1960. In 1957 he became the editor-in-chief of the Albanological journal ''Shejzat'' published in Rome. In 1961 he settled in Munich and first worked as a lector at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, while in 1964 he became a Privatdozent. Gjon Buzuku
Gjon Buzuku (15 March 1499 – 9 October 1577) was an Albanian Catholic priest who wrote the first known printed book in Albanian. Gjon Buzuku according to the elders wrote the Missal in the village of Brisk Posht in the Shestan - Krajë region, close to Northern Albania (Krajë is located on the shores of Shkodra Lake), then Ottoman Empire. There are claims that he was the bishop of two dioceses in north Albania or that he was a monk. From March 20, 1554, to January 5, 1555, he wrote a translation of the Catholic missal into the Gheg dialect of Albanian. He published it as a book of 220 pages. The Apostolic Library in the Vatican holds the only known copy of the book. It is missing the frontispiece and the first 16 sheets, which explains why the title and year of publication of the work are not known. The book was discovered in 1740 by Gjon Nikollë Kazazi, the archbishop of Skopje. In other libraries there are three photocopies from the original, one of them in Tirana. In 1996 ... Uran Butka
Uran Butka (2 December 1938) is an Albanian writer, historian and politician. The son of Safet Butka and grandson of Sali Butka, he is one of the founding members of the ''National Association of Political Prisoners''. Butka also served as a member of the Albanian Parliament from 1992 to 1997. Life After completing his pedagogical studies, Butka worked for 16 years as a teacher of linguistics and literature in the districts of Fier, Krujë and Tiranë. Due to his family biography he was laid off from his job as a teacher and later worked as a painter at a shoe factory in Tirana. In 1976, along with his family, he was interned to Tropojë then later to Martanesh where he lived for 11 years in isolation, changing his profession and working as an accountant at the local village cooperative. Pjetër Budi
Pjetër Budi (1566 – December 1622), was a prominent Albanian writer and a Catholic bishop. He is known for his first work ''"Doktrina e Kërshtenë"'' (The Christian Doctrine), an Albanian translation of the catechism of Robert Bellarmine, which was published in Rome in 1618. In 1599 Pjetër Budi was appointed Vicar General of the Catholic Church in Serbia, a position he held for seventeen years. Later he was appointed bishop of Diocese of Sapë and Sarda. Life Budi was born in Gur i Bardhë in the Mat region, and is a noted and respected figure in Albanian cultural history. In addition to his political and religious activities, he published four books in Albanian, a rarity at the time, and was the first Albanian writer to publish a substantial amount of poetry in Albanian, some 3,300 lines of it. Klara Buda
Klara Buda is a French Albanian journalist and writer. She is the former head of the Albanian Department of Radio France Internationale (RFI), which she left in 2010. Buda has also worked for UNESCO and the BBC. She is of French nationality and Albanian ethnicity. Buda writes prose, poetry, fiction and TV plays. Biography Klara Buda was born in Elbasan, Albania. After graduating in modern literature at the Sorbonne, she studied history of art at the École pratique des hautes études. In 1997, she embarked on her career as a freelance journalist at the BBC before joining Radio France Internationale (RFI). She worked for a short period at UNESCO's Communication Division in 1998 but returned to RFI in 1999, first as a specialized journalist, then from 2005 as a principal editor. Appointed editor in chief in 2006, she headed RFI's Albanian department until 2010. Gjergj Bubani
Gjergj Bubani (1899-1954) was an Albanian publicist, writer, and translator. He is also known as Jorgji Bubani, or Brumbulli (the beetle) which was his pen-name for his satiric articles. Bubani was born in Boboshticë, a village near Korçë, today's Albania. He attended the French Lycee in Korçë, and then went to Athens where he attended the Industrial College. Bubani studied there chemistry. After the studies he moved to Romania, where at the time there was a large and active Albanian community (see: Albanians in Romania). His publicistics started in 1919, with some articles for the newspaper ''Kuvendi'' (Convent) in Italy. In Romania, Bubani worked for the Albanian newspaper ''Shqiperi' e Re'' (New Albania) from 1920 to 1922 (started initially in Bucharest and from July 1920 moved to Costanza by Albanian activist Ilo Mitkë Qafëzezi).
