Flag Of Newfoundland And Labrador
The flag of Newfoundland and Labrador was introduced in 1980 and was designed by Newfoundland artist Christopher Pratt. The flag design was approved by the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly, House of Assembly of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Newfoundland, Canada, on May 28, 1980. It was flown for the first time on Discovery Day#Canada, Discovery Day, June 24, 1980. The name of the province was changed to Newfoundland and Labrador by an amendment to the constitution of Canada in December 2001 at the request of the provincial legislature. Design Symbolism The design was chosen due to its broad symbolism. Charles Robert Ayre
Charles Robert Ayre (December 22, 1819 – April 12, 1889) was an English-born merchant and political figure in Newfoundland. He represented Burin in the Newfoundland House of Assembly from 1873 to 1878 as a Conservative. He was born in Exeter and came to Newfoundland in 1842 as a clerk. By 1856, he had established his own business, Ayre and Sons, in St. John's with John Steer. Ayre served in the Legislative Council of Newfoundland from 1879 to 1889 and was a minister without portfolio in the Executive Council in 1885. He died in St. John's at the age of 69. Eric Blackwood
Eric Blackwood (born December 7, 1921) is a Canadian aviator. A noted navigator, during World War II, serving in both the Royal Canadian Air Force and the Royal Air Force, Blackwood is the founder of Eastern Provincial Airways. In the early days of EPA, Blackwood acted as pilot, operations manager and director. Blackwood was born in Brookfield, Bonavista Bay, Newfoundland. He was educated at Wesleyville and went on to Prince of Wales College at St. John's. He joined the air force in 1942. In 1945 he formed Newfoundland Aero Sales and Services Inc. with James McLoughlin and Ren Goobie. Newfoundland Aero Sales and Service was eventually sold to Maritime Central Airways in 1949. David Blackwood
David Lloyd Blackwood (November 7, 1941 – July 2, 2022) was a Canadian artist known chiefly for his intaglio prints, often depicting dramatic historical scenes of Newfoundland outport life and industry, such as shipwrecks, seal hunting, iceberg encounters and resettlement. He also created paintings, drawings and woodcuts. Early life Blackwood was born in Wesleyville, Newfoundland, on November 7, 1941. His family was involved in seafaring, which guided the artwork he later made. He opened his first art studio in 1956, and was awarded a scholarship three years later to study at the Ontario College of Art. After graduating in 1963, he remained in Ontario, where he became Art Master at Trinity College School in Port Hope. Jordan Bennett (artist)
Jordan Bennett (born 1986) is a multi-disciplinary artist of Mi'kmaq descent from Stephenville Crossing, Newfoundland, also known as Ktaqamkuk. He is married to Métis visual artist Amy Malbeuf. Bennett works predominantly with painting, silkscreening, sculpture, video, installation and sound. Since 2008, Bennett has shown his work both nationally and internationally in over 75 exhibitions, notably ''Beat Nation: Art, Hip Hop and Aboriginal Culture'', an exhibition co-curated by Kathleen Ritter and Tania Willard that toured nationally in Canada from 2012–2014. Education Bennett earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree at Grenfell Campus in Corner Brook, Newfoundland in 2008. He then went on to receive a Masters of Fine Arts (MFA) Degree at the University of British Columbia Okanagan in Kelowna, British Columbia in 2016. Charles Fox Bennett
Charles James Fox Bennett (11 June 1793 in Shaftesbury, England – 5 December 1883) was a merchant and politician who successfully fought attempts to take Newfoundland into Canadian confederation. Bennett was a successful businessman and one of the colony's richest residents with interests in the fisheries, distillery and brewery industry and shipbuilding. His brother Thomas Bennett, a magistrate and member of Newfoundland's first House of Assembly, was a partner in the business. Bennett became involved in politics in the 1840s as a leader of the colony's Anglican community and an opponent of responsible government, an argument he lost when an alliance of Catholics and non-Anglican Protestants persuaded the Colonial Office to grant Newfoundland self-government. Robert Bartlett (explorer)
Robert Abram Bartlett (August 15, 1875 – April 28, 1946) was a Newfoundland-born American Arctic explorer of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Early life Born in Brigus, Colony of Newfoundland, Bartlett was the oldest of ten children born to William James Bartlett and Mary J. Leamon, and heir to a family tradition of seafaring. He grew up in Hawthorne Cottage in Brigus. By the age of 17, he mastered his first ship and began a lifelong love affair with the Arctic. Rex Barnes
Rex Barnes (born June 4, 1959) is a Canadian politician. Born in Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland and Labrador, Barnes was a member of the Progressive Conservative caucus in the House of Commons of Canada, representing the riding of Gander—Grand Falls. Elected in a by-election in 2002, he lost his seat in the 2004 election to Liberal candidate Scott Simms, running as the member for Bonavista—Exploits. Barnes has been a paramedic, and a volunteer worker. Barnes was the Progressive Conservative critic for Public Works and Government Services, and Transport. He served as a city councillor in Grand Falls-Windsor for 9 years. Barnes served as mayor of Grand Falls-Windsor from September 2005 to September 2009. Charles Ballam
Charles H. Ballam (May 10, 1901 – December 12, 1981) was a Canadian union leader, officeholder and delegate at Newfoundland National Convention. Ballam was born in 1901 in Curling, Newfoundland Colony, son of Alice and Manoah Ballam. He was educated at Curling high school, became an apprentice in the electrical department of the Anglo-Newfoundland Development Company, operators of the pulp and paper mill in Grand Falls. When Bowater's constructed a pulp and paper mill in Corner Brook in the mid-1920s, Ballam moved there to be close to his former home in Curling. In 1940, his career changed when he became a representative for Sun Life Assurance Company. Ballam, elected president of Local 64 of the Pulp and Sulphite Workers Union in Corner Brook in 1935, had also attended the founding convention of the Newfoundland Federation of Labour in 1937. James Baird (merchant)
James Baird (30 November 1828 – 30 May 1915) was Scottish born and came to Newfoundland at 16 and soon established himself as a prominent merchant. Baird, a brother, and later a nephew built up a business which included a large array of general merchandise and eventually branched into the fishery supply business. He was an early steam yacht owner: GRIFFIN was built in 1865 for him by Aitken & Mansel, Whiteinch, Glasgow, Scotland. By the mid-1880s, they had entered the fish export trade and survived both the St. John's fire in 1892 and the banking collapse a few years later. He was highly important in the founding and supporting of many industries. Baird, despite his high profile and important business career, is best known in Newfoundland history for the famous ''Baird et al. v. Walker'' case. George Baker (Canadian Politician)
George S. Baker (born September 4, 1942) is a Canadian politician and former member of the Senate of Canada. Baker was first elected to the House of Commons in the 1974 election as the Liberal Member of Parliament (MP) for Gander—Twillingate, in Newfoundland and Labrador. He was re-elected in every subsequent election (representing Gander—Grand Falls after 1988) until his appointment to the Senate by Governor General Adrienne Clarkson, on the recommendation of Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, in 2002. Although a popular and articulate MP, he was hurt by the tradition of appointing no more than one Canadian Cabinet minister from Newfoundland at a time, and by his reputation as a maverick who said what he thought rather than what the party leadership would like him to say.
