List Of Heritage Railways And Funiculars In Switzerland
This is a list of heritage railways in Switzerland. For convenience, the list includes any pre-World War II railway in the large sense of the term (either adhesion railway, rack railway or funicular) currently operated with at least several original or historical carriages. Switzerland has a very dense rail network, both standard and narrow gauge. The overwhelming majority of railways, built between the mid-19th and early 20th century, are still in regular operation today and were electrified earlier than in the rest of Europe. The major exception is the Furka Steam Railway, the longest unelectrified line in the country. However, numerous rail operators, notably SBB Historic, provide services with well-maintained historical rolling stock. Les Avants–Sonloup Funicular
The Les Avants–Sonloup funicular (french: Chemin de fer Les Avants–Sonloup) is a metre gauge funicular railway in the Swiss canton of Vaud. It links the railway station of Les Avants, on the Montreux–Oberland Bernois railway between Montreux and Montbovon, with an upper terminus at Sonloup. Description The funicular, which was opened on 14 December 1912, runs at a right angle to the MOB line for a distance of and in doing so climbs at a 54% gradient to a height of above Les Avants. The line is still operated with the original Belle Epoque carriages. The peak season for tourists, is in the spring, when the narcissus and forget-me-not plants flower in the meadowlands near the summit. Schynige Platte Railway
The Schynige Platte Railway (german: Schynige Platte-Bahn, SPB) is a mountain railway in the Bernese Highlands area of Switzerland, which connects the town of Wilderswil, near Interlaken with the famous wildflower gardens of the Schynige Platte. The Riffelalp tram (german: Riffelalptram, RiT) is a high altitude tramway line located in the Swiss canton of Valais near the resort of Zermatt. The line links the Riffelalp Resort to Riffelalp station, on the Gornergrat railway, and via that line to Zermatt and beyond. The Riffelalp tram is the highest tram line in Europe.
