Flag Of Austria
The flag of Austria ( de-AT, Flagge Österreichs) is the flag of the nation of Austria. It consists of three bands of colour in the following order: red, white, and red. The Austrian flag is considered one of the oldest national symbols still in use by a modern country, with its first recorded use in 1230. The Austrian triband originated from the arms of the Babenberg dynasty. As opposed to other flags, such as the black-and-yellow banner of the Habsburgs, the red-white-red flag was from very early on associated, not with a reigning family or monarch, but with the country itself. In addition to serving as the flag of Austria since 1230, it was adopted as the naval ensigns and flags of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and Duchy of Modena and Reggio in the 18th and 19th centuries respectively, as both were ruled by cadet branches of the House of Habsburg. Karl Merkatz
Karl Merkatz (17 November 1930 – 4 December 2022) was an Austrian actor. Merkatz was born on 17 November 1930 in Wiener Neustadt, the son of a firefighter. He first wanted to become a carpenter. After World War II he was an active Boy Scout in Wiener Neustadt. However, later he started to enroll in acting lessons in Salzburg, Vienna and Zurich. Then he found employment in theatres, most notably in Munich, Salzburg, Hamburg and Vienna (Theater in der Josefstadt). During his later career he starred in several roles in television and motion pictures. In the role of Edmund Sackbauer (Mundl) in the 1970s, he became famous as the typical Viennese ('' Ein echter Wiener geht nicht unter''). Another big success came with the films "Bockerer" starring as a naive Viennese during the Second World War in Vienna (the later films are set in the subsequent years to 1945). Bernhard Cella
Bernhard Cella (born 1969 in Salzburg) is an Austrian artist and curator. Academic career Cella studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Erich Wonder, the University of Arts and Industrial Design Linz with Herbert Lachmayer and the Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg. Cella was a researcher in the Center of Art and Knowledge Transfer at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and led the project 'NO ISBN' which investigated Austrian art publications with and without ISBN. In 2015 he left the university to continue his research with the project 'Behind No-ISBN' at the independent Research Institute for Arts and Technology. Work Cella is an advocate of artist books as a medium and has curated numerous exhibitions with and about artist books. He has stated that a good art book can replace a visit to a museum, because it offers many possibilities for discourse and experimentation. Maria Auböck
Maria Auböck (born 1951) is an Austrian landscape architect and educator. In 1985, she opened her own firm where, since 1987, she has been working together with János Kárász. Biography Born in Vienna on 20 June 1951, Auböck is the daughter of the Austrian industrial designer and architect Carl Auböck (1924–1993), who was himself the son of the designer and painter Carl Auböck (1900–1957). She studied architecture at the Vienna University of Technology, specializing in urban development. Thereafter she attended the Technical University of Munich on a research grant. From 1985 to 2000, Auböck lectured on garden and landscape architecture at the Vienna University of Technology as well as in Innsbruck and Munich. Felix De Weldon
Felix Weihs de Weldon (April 12, 1907 – June 3, 2003) was an American sculptor. His most famous pieces include the United States Marine Corps War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial, 1954) in the Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia, US, and the Malaysian National Monument (1966) in Kuala Lumpur. Biography Felix de Weldon was born in Vienna, Austria-Hungary on April 12, 1907. He received his early education at St. Egichin's Grammar School. Gilla (singer)
Gilla (; born Gisela Wuchinger , 27 February 1950) is an Austrian singer from the late 1970s disco era. History Gilla was discovered by German producer Frank Farian who got her signed to Hansa Records in 1974. After an unsuccessful German cover version "Mir ist kein Weg zu weit" of Marcella Bella's Italian hit single "Nessuno mai", Farian had her record a German disco version of Labelle's "Lady Marmalade". Despite being a modest hit (#24), it drew some media attention in Germany from being the first cover with the same explicit lyrics "Willst du mit mir schlafen gehn?" (Do You Want To Sleep With Me) (1975). It was followed later in the year with "Tu es" (recorded in English as "Why Don't You Do It") which became Gilla's biggest hit, peaking at No.10 in the German charts and giving Farian a commercial breakthrough as a producer. Oskar Werner (; born Oskar Josef Bschließmayer; 13 November 1922 23 October 1984) was an Austrian stage and cinema actor whose prominent roles include two 1965 films, '' The Spy Who Came in from the Cold'' and ''Ship of Fools''. Maria Weiss (singer)
Maria Weiss is an Austrian mezzo-soprano from Carinthia who sings classical music from the Baroque period as well as more recent compositions, including Spanish and Latin-American works. After completing her studies under at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz in 2003, she received further training from Angelika Kirchschlager and Teresa Berganza. In 2009, she made her début at the Konzerthaus in Vienna singing Bach cantatas. Erich Oswald Hans Carl Maria von Stroheim (born Erich Oswald Stroheim; September 22, 1885 – May 12, 1957) was an Austrian-American director, actor and producer, most noted as a film star and avant-garde, visionary director of the silent era. His 1924 film ''Greed'' (an adaptation of Frank Norris's 1899 novel ''McTeague'') is considered one of the finest and most important films ever made. After clashes with Hollywood studio bosses over budget and workers' rights problems, Stroheim found it difficult to find work as a director and subsequently became a well-respected character actor, particularly in French cinema. Maximilian Schell
Maximilian Schell (8 December 1930 – 1 February 2014) was an Austrian-born Swiss actor, who also wrote, directed and produced some of his own films. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor for the 1961 American film ''Judgment at Nuremberg'', his second acting role in Hollywood. Born in Austria, his parents were involved in the arts and he grew up surrounded by acting and literature. While he was a child, his family fled to Switzerland in 1938 when Austria was annexed by Nazi Germany, and they settled in Zurich. After World War II ended, Schell took up acting and directing full-time. He appeared in numerous German films, often anti-war, before moving on to Hollywood.
