Lin Shen (politician)
Lin Shen ( zh, 林慎 October 1908 – 28 October 1992), also known as Mu En, was a Taiwanese politician. She was one of the first group of women elected to the Legislative Yuan in 1948.《第一屆立法委員名鑑》，立法院立法委員名鑑指導委員會編印，1982年2月，第63頁 Biography Born in Taipei County, Lin attended Hwa Nan College in Fuzhou, graduating in 1930. She then studied biology at Yenching University, before transferring to the Department of Sociology at Xiamen University, where she earned a BA. She subsequently attended the research institute of Columbia University. She worked in Shanghai and Nanjing, where she became secretary of the Young Women's Christian Association in both cities. Legislative Yuan
The Legislative Yuan is the unicameral legislature of the Republic of China (Taiwan) located in Taipei. The Legislative Yuan is composed of 113 members, who are directly elected for 4-year terms by people of the Taiwan Area through a parallel voting system. Originally located in Nanking, the Legislative Yuan, along with the National Assembly (electoral college) and the Control Yuan (upper house), formed the tricameral parliament under the original 1947 Constitution. The Legislative Yuan previously had 759 members representing each constituencies of all provinces, municipalities, Tibet, Outer Mongolia and various professions. Until democratization, the Republic of China was an authoritarian state under Dang Guo, the Legislative Yuan had alternatively been characterized as a rubber stamp for the then-ruling regime of the Kuomintang. The Kuomintang (KMT), also referred to as the Guomindang (GMD), the Nationalist Party of China (NPC) or the Chinese Nationalist Party (CNP), is a major political party in the Republic of China, initially on the Chinese mainland and in Taiwan after 1949. It was the sole party in China during the Republican Era from 1928 to 1949, when most of the Chinese mainland was under its control. The party retreated from the mainland to Taiwan on 7 December 1949, following its defeat in the Chinese Civil War. Chiang Kai-shek declared martial law and retained its authoritarian rule over Taiwan under the ''Dang Guo'' system until democratic reforms were enacted in the 1980s and full democratization in the 1990s. Or Hsieh or Hsieh Er ( zh, 謝娥; January 1918 – 1995) was a Taiwanese physician, educator and politician. The first female surgeon from Taiwan, she was also one of the first group of women elected to the Legislative Yuan in 1948. Biography Hsieh was born in 1918 in Báng-kah, the second of four children of Hsieh Quan, who owned a restaurant. 1948 Republic Of China Legislative Election
The 1st Legislative Yuan election was held in China between 21 and 23 January 1948. This election, and the preceding 1947 National Assembly election are the first elections of under the newly ratified 1947 Constitution of the Republic of China. Under this constitution, the Legislative Yuan is a standing legislature when the National Assembly is not in session. At the time most of Chinese territory was under the control of the government of the Republic of China, using a direct voting system elected 759 Legislative Representatives. Using the Republic's then 461 million population to calculate, on average 600,000 people elected one representative in the Legislative Yuan. The election along with the one held for the National Assembly also made China the largest democracy at the time. The newly elected Legislative Yuan met for the first time on 21 May.
