Lichtenstein, Baden-Württemberg
Lichtenstein is a municipality in the Tübingen administrative region in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It lies at the foot of the Swabian Jura (plateau). History The municipality of Lichtenstein was created on 1 January 1975 by the merger of Honau, , and Unterhausen (which had in 1930 merged with Oberhausen). By the agreement made before this merger, Unterhausen changed its name to Lichtenstein, after the famous Lichtenstein Castle above the town. The towns of the municipality expanded substantially from 1975 to 1990 thanks to tourism. Lichtenstein expanded the most, first purchasing an old industrial site in 1979 to turn it into a new town center. Lichtenstein Castle (german: Burg Lichtenstein) is a levelled spur castle on the hill of Burgberg Lichtenstein, , near the Greifenstein village of Holzhausen on the old military High Road, that ran from Frankfurt via Wetzlar to Cologne. The castle site is situated to the north of, and above, the Ulmbach Reservoir in the Hessian county of Lahn-Dill-Kreis. History The little castle on a hill spur was probably built around 1225 by the Lords of Lichtenstein, close relatives of the Lords of Greifenstein. This is not, however, clear from the records, because it is unclear, whether Conrad of Lichtenstein, who is named in deeds in 1225 and 1229, also belonged to the family of the Lichtensteins in Greifenstein. Lichtenstein Castle () is a privately owned Gothic Revival castle located in the Swabian Jura of southern Germany. Liechtenstein Castle (german: Burg Liechtenstein) is a privately owned castle near Maria Enzersdorf in Lower Austria, bordering Vienna. It is on the edge of the '' Wienerwald'' (Vienna Woods). The castle, originally built during the 12th century, was destroyed by the Ottomans in the siege of Vienna in 1529, and again in the Battle of Vienna in 1683, and it remained in ruins until 1884, when it was rebuilt with the help of architect Carl Gangolf Kayser. ''Lichtenstein. Romantische Sage aus der wuerttembergischen Geschichte'' is a historical novel by Wilhelm Hauff, first published in 1826, the year before his early death. Set in and around Württemberg, it is considered his greatest literary success next to his fairy-tales, and, together with the work of the almost forgotten Benedikte Naubert, represents the beginning of historical novel-writing in Germany. The Liechtenstein Museum is a private art museum in Vienna, Austria. It contains much of the art collection of its owners, the Princely Family of Liechtenstein, rulers of the principality of Liechtenstein. It includes important European works of art, forming one of the world's leading private art collections. Its highlight used to be Leonardo da Vinci's portrait of ''Ginevra de' Benci'', which was acquired in 1967 by the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
